OMGlitzy! New blog! New name!

omglitzy.com

I’m excited to share that I have come up with a fun new name to go by – OMGlitzy! I’m still Glitzy and I’m still geeky, but I have felt like going by a different online handle for awhile now. I’m still going to update this blog with cosplay tutorials and giveaways, though. So don’t lose this bookmark! Since this site became cosplay centric and still gets lots of hits, I plan to keep it updated when I can. But my new blog www.omglitzy.com is going to be a little more random and a place for me to hopefully post more often without the pressure of making an epic post each time. What I mean is I started to feel like if I didn’t make a cosplay post with lots of photos, links, and information then no one wanted to read it. I didn’t want to clutter this site with random ramblings. I dunno, I am sure it’s just some weird blogger insecurity thing. But what I’m getting at is my new blog will be more laid back and easier for me to just chat about what’s going in my life!

I’ve already updated my Instagram and Twitter to my new handle – @OMGlitzy – but my Facebook and YouTube links will have to stay /GlitzyGeekGirl since they don’t offer name changes. I debated about how to handle my Twitch channel (since they don’t do name changes either) and ultimately decided that since I plan to stay pretty active on there that I would go ahead and make a new channel with my new name. So if you’d like to keep following me on Twitch head over to twitch.tv/omglitzy and give it a follow!

Thanks so much for staying interested in this blog while I’ve gone through some transitions this year. Coming soon here will be a Wonder Woman cosplay tutorial!

HUGS!!

Pinterest Enthusiast

As most females are these days, I am quite the Pinterest enthusiast. I have 26 boards of different themes that I enjoy “pinning” inspirational or creative photos to. Most of the time I am pinning hair and fashion ideas. But it’s a great place to organize your favorite pics of any category. Here are some of my recent favorites!

Pinterest would be a great tool for a dating website. It shows places I want to visit, my favorite foods, my style,  favorite music and things I love to geek out to! It’s all about me! If you don’t agree with my pins then we probably aren’t a good match 😛

It’s also great because it will usually take you to the source of each photo. So if you see a hair tutorial you like you can click the pic and it’ll link you to it’s original website. All the above photos can be found on my Pinterest and most have the source attached. Do you have a Pinterest account? Recommend any I should follow?

  1. These are awesome! Just went to follow your pinterest boards! =)

Hehe I really like your comment about it totally being a great tool for a dating website. So true!

Quick Hair Tip: Extensions

Q: I have been thinking about getting extensions, but this would be my first time and I know at Regis you guys only do the clip ins which is cool. The thing that worries me is getting them to look right when I am putting them in everyday. I was also curious as to whether or not you can highlight them? I originally wanted to come see you for a cut and blonde highlights, but am leaning towards extensions, so I wasnt sure how the whole highlighting thing would work.

A: There’s a few types of extensions .. Clip in will be the least damaging to your hair, however, they don’t stay in long. It’s typically pretty hard to sleep in them and wake up with them in the same spot. So they’re good if you just need them for the day. Even if you were to glue them in they would only last about a week or two. Bonded extensions last a lot longer – 3-6 months – but are really expensive. I wouldn’t recommend highighting any type. Even if the extension is human hair the color results aren’t guaranteed to match. I suggest coloring your own hair the color you want and get extensions to match it. They make hair that has different tones in it, too. Hope that helps some! 🙂

Shredder Cosplay Tutorial

TONIGHT I DINE ON TURTLE SOUP!

So last October I decided I wanted to make a Shredder cosplay to wear to the Dallas Sci Fi Expo in February! I chose this character because I am a big Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle fan. Since I wasn’t sure how to make a turtle costume, I decided Shredder would be awesome! Also, I enjoyed making armor for my Fiona cosplay and wanted to try it again.
This is a fairly simple costume. Overall, it was super cheap for me since I used sheet foam for nearly everything. If you wanted it sturdier you could use Worbla. I’ve also seen it made out of cardboard and duct tape.
In this tutorial, I explain how I made the armor, helmet, tunic and cape.

WARNING – PICTURE HEAVY!!!

Be sure to click on a picture to make it bigger if you need to see it better!

I decided to make the version from the 1987 TMNT animated TV series.
ARMOR
The first thing I did was freehand a design on paper for the armbands, leg guards and fists.
I traced my design onto sheet foam and cut them out.
Then I painted them with gesso.
Using my paper patterns, I cut out another round of armor from sheet foam, but this time cut the center out so I could glue a border onto my first pieces. Then gesso again.
I wanted the blades to be really thick so they wouldn’t bend, wobble or break off. So I found that these “door hangers” were made of extra thick foam and perfect!
I freehanded this design onto the foam and made 4 long spikes for the fists.
Then I made 28 little spikes for the rest of the armor. Omg this took forever.
The 8 loose spikes at the top are for the shoulders. Those will be explained soon.
I glued all the spikes on.
Then I gesso’d the spikes.
Pixie helping!
Since I didn’t want the shoulders to be flat, I ordered a kid’s football shoulder gear from Amazon for $9. They were made out of plastic and light weight.
So I glued on the spikes, gesso’d them, and eventually take them off the black thingy. I end up using velcro to attach these to my shoulders. I just put a strip of velcro on the inside of that little flap and on the top my shirt.
This was the silver metallic spray paint I used for all the armor.
I spray painted the top and underneath sides.
This next step was me just winging it. I needed a way to wear the armor and wasn’t sure if sheet foam would be sturdy enough. So I bought some cheap tube socks, cut them, put some fray check (it’s like a light glue) on the edges so they wouldn’t fray, then spray painted them silver.
I glued the socks to the back of my armor.  It worked great for the arms and fists, but not the legs which I will explain soon.
To give the arms a rounded feel I put them over a Pringles can and some rolled up posters and let them sit like this for a couple days.
Here are the armbands and fists. They are tight and comfy and won’t slip. I know it doesn’t look fantastic but in person you really can’t tell since they are underneath.
The sock idea didn’t work for the legs because I couldn’t slide them over my boots. Duh! So instead I used sheet foam and velcro.
These fit great over my boots. I painted the band silver, too.
HELMET
I used is a kid’s construction helmet from Hobby Lobby. It’s made out of foam so of course it’s suuuuper light weight. I made a pattern out of paper and tape to figure out how I wanted the spikes to look. Shredder’s helmet is kinda boring in the cartoon (it’s very flat) so I took some creative freedom here. I wanted it to be more angular like his newer helmets.
I traced my pattern onto more sheet foam and glued it onto the helmet. Then I trimmed the front bill and added a point in the middle.
Next I made the side and back panels out of foam and glued them to the inside of the helmet. Then I gesso’d it.
Then I glued the panels together.
I sprayed painted it the same color as the armor.
Pixie helping!
MASK
The mask is made using a surgical mask from Walmart. I got a box of 20 for like $3.
I traced out a shape I liked that would cover the front of the mask and have a bit to cover the nose then glued it on. I only put glue on the edge so it would stay smooth. Then gesso it and spray paint it!
TUNIC
My tunic was a long sleeve dress I got from American Apparel. Any grey shirt/dress would work. I got this one because it was form-fitting and long. I lined up the sides of the dress and pinned it together. Then cut out a small slit. Do not cut this too big!
Hem the edges and be amazed at how much it will stretch open. That’s why I said don’t cut too big 😛
CAPE
I had a rough time finding purple fabric. No idea why! This one was the best I could find.
Basically I left it a long rectangle and just hemmed the edges twice. I made a big opening for the neck. I say big because you want it to be really draped looking in the front.
MAKEUP
For my eyes, I used a lot of black eyeliner and smokey grey eyeshadow. Around the edge of the grey I did a little bit of red eyeshadow to make it look more evil! I also made my brows thicker and darker and put on a lot of mascara.
All of these photos were taken by my mom and edited by me. The belt, boots and leggings were items I already owned.
So that’s it! Now it’s time for TURTLE SOUP! Muwahaha!
I will be wearing this cosplay all day Saturday February 8th at the Dallas Sci Fi Expo.

I also made a short, silly video of me in costume you can watch here.

Be sure to let me know if you use this tutorial to make a costume! 🙂

  16. Did the face mask make you feel smothered? Everything looks fantastic, but using the surgical mask with I'm guessing was a piece of foam over it,seems like it would be really suffocating. Was it breathable? It looks really good, just concerned it would be hard to breathe in.

    1. I am not really sure how to explain how I measured it. I have a habit of "just winging" it .. I kind of just eyeballed how big of a gap I needed.. made sure it was long enough to barely drag the floor.. and then when I wore it I had my mom safety pin it to my shirt. I know that probably doesn't help you much! Sorry but good luck and be sure to send me a pic 🙂

OMGLITZY: The Hobbit

The Hobbit

When The Hobbit was released, I was kinda bummed I couldn’t make it to the midnight premiere.. I usually like to dress up for those! So it’s been on my to-do list to go see the movie .. Last night I finally got to!! The theater was still pretty packed, and it’s funny to see mostly males rather than females (since I usually go to chick flicks) in the seats. I haven’t read the book yet – that’s on another to-do list – but I still really enjoyed the movie. I’ve been told they changed it up some compared to the book. I’d like to see it one more time in theaters and this will definitely be one I want to own! It had just enough humor, magic, action and great great music. My favorite part is the beautiful costumes.

Lady Galadriel’s hair!!! Omg!! 😛 I am definitely going to cosplay her or Arwen soon.
She’s so magical. I wish I was an elf!!
The song the dwarves sing at Bilbo’s house gave me goosebumps, too.
Thorin was a truly emotional character.. I really enjoyed his performance throughout the whole movie.
This is “Song of The Lonely Mountain” performed by Neil Finn.
He’s an outstanding singer from New Zealand.
When this song played during the credits I couldn’t leave until it was finished.
There was no stinger after the credits, but I recommend staying for the music 🙂
And for a cool look at The Hobbit sets by Lego check out MTV Geek!
So today I’m going to listen to The Hobbit soundtrack on repeat, wear my elf crown around the house, and slay some orcs on EverQuest II ! 😀
Have you seen The Hobbit yet? If so, what did you think?? And don’t forget to read my review of The Hobbit menu from Denny’s!

  1. Did you see it in 2d or 3d? I haven't seen it yet because of all the talk about the headache inducing frame rate of the movie. Did you get any of that when you saw it?

    1. I saw it in 2D. I did notice it was hard to see clearly during the battle scenes. No headaches for me, though!

  2. Long post ahead… too much to say.

I saw The Hobbit (An Unexpected Journey) twice… and would love to see it again… very few theaters have it in IMAX 3D HFR, but there's one near you… thought about a trip but probably won't find time 🙁

I saw it in 2D the first time just to enjoy the movie for what it is. It's a bit slow in parts (especially in the beginning) and does suffer from story bloat, but once it gets moving, it's pretty exciting. I loved the The Lord of the Rings trilogy even though I had never read the books, and I was really excited by the extended editions of the movies. It's pretty easy for me to sit through 3 hours of any story Peter Jackson wants to tell about Middle Earth, so The Hobbit was pure enjoyment for me.

All 2D formats are normal frame rate (24 frames per second). The 3D format comes in 2 flavors, the normal frame rate or the high frame rate (HFR, 48 frames per second). One benefit of the HFR is to allow more images and more light to reach the eyes, helping to minimize the darkening of movies that occurs with current 3D technology. It's also supposed to allow action to appear smoother to our eyes. In the real world, there is no frame rate, and our eyes perceive much higher rates of motion than we're used to seeing (and even more than the HFR can provide).

One complaint regarding HFR is that it looks fake. Partly this is because our eyes are used to seeing motion appear less fluid on film. For reasons I don't fully understand, this also involves the props and sets appearing cheaper.

Interestingly, the computer-generated effects have generally been the least-bothersome to most people. This Kotaku article explains this really well: http://kotaku.com/5970900/avatar-2-could-look-even-more-like-a-video-game-than-the-hobbit-does-but-that-might-not-be-a-bad-thing

My experience seeing it in 3D HFR was good. Lady Frog did not enjoy it as much. The opening of the movie is primarily live-action, so the HFR stands out a bit more, and it does take some getting used to. I did enjoy that the movie appeared less dark than many 3D films do. The 3D was overall very well-done and primarily limited to giving depth to scenes rather than being gimmicky with things flying out of the screen at you. I enjoyed the 3D most in the broad, panoramic scenes of Rivendale and other parts of Middle Earth.

In general, I think 3D can often seem very natural but can sometimes be quite jarring. I felt the same way about the HFR. Put together, most of the movie was fine. Some parts were distracting because of the 3D, some because of the HFR, and some because of both.

If I watched The Hobbit again, I'm not sure what format I'd prefer. Although I'd like to see it in 3D again at some point (maybe at home and not in the theater), I still default to seeing movies in 2D, and The Hobbit is likely not going to be an exception to that rule. Especially when watching movies at home, wearing the 3D glasses is awkward when you're eating, getting up to go get a drink, or trying to see what the cat is chewing on.

Overall, I enjoyed The Hobbit. I think it did a good job of getting our heroes out to the start of their quest. As an introduction movie, it may not have had as much action or excitement in it. I think the 2nd movie will be very exciting (and possibly the 3rd depending on how they break up the story and what extra material they add in), but I've also heard a lot people fear that the 2nd movie is where most of the boring bloat will be added. Either way, I can't wait until the next 2 come out and may have to find time to see The Hobbit again before they do.

    ReplyDelete

  3. And I'm not done yet…

Until recently, I never read The Lord of the Rings. I read The Hobbit at some point after seeing the The Lord of the Rings movies and was not very impressed.

I recently re-read The Hobbit in the months leading up to the film's release. I found it to be a more enjoyable read this time around. Although The Hobbit is a relatively light-hearted story with a fair bit of humor, its telling by J.R.R. Tolkien seemed somewhat dry to me.

After completing The Hobbit for the second time, I began reading The Lord of the Rings. It was fairly exhausting, and I can't say that I enjoyed it much. There is no denying Tolkien's accomplishment in creating this fully fleshed-out fantasy world complete with races, languages, and a rich history. The impact his works had on the fantasy genre including books, movies, and especially video games is unparalleled. However, I do not think he was a very gifted writer, and his books are cumbersome to read. There were some things that I felt his books approached better, but in general, I believe that Peter Jackson's telling of the story of The Lord of the Rings is greatly superior.

I encourage you to try reading The Hobbit, because it's always great to pick up a book! It's a pretty short book, so it's not too hard to get through. Maybe you'll love it.

Without getting into any spoilers, Peter Jackson took a few liberties with the story (as he did with LotR) in the interest of balancing out his telling of it. I'm not too crazy about Azog in the movie (why he appears to be blatantly CGI when all the main orcs in LotR looked great as men in costumes; why the orcs are now talking in another language with really glaring subtitles), but I recognize why Peter Jackson's included him. (Tolkien wrote about him but did not include him in the telling of The Hobbit.) Again, I'm very excited for the next 2 movies.

After completing The Lord of the Rings, I trudged through the 100+ pages of appendices at the end of Return of the King. Obviously, it was not meant to be enjoyed as narrative (I assume), and I was not expecting to consider it a great literary work. It did give a lot of interesting insight into the depth of Tolkien's world and some of the back story that gets left out along the way (some of which Peter Jackson is incorporating into The Hobbit to make it 3 movies).

I just recently began reading The Silmarillion. I've always heard that it's the least enjoyable of all of Tolkien's books, but so far I'm enjoying it the most. We'll see how I feel at its completion, however.

    Ser Frog out.

    1. Great information on the difference in 2D and 3D, Ser Frog!! I definitely learned a lot 😀 I have only ever seen ONE movie in 3D. It was "Brave" .. I enjoyed it and was surprised how the 3D effects merely "enhanced" the scenery. I still haven't been to anything in IMAX.

I think adding The Hobbit to my reading list will be a must. I have felt a bit lost ever since Harry Potter ended so I am constantly looking for new book ideas.

Perhaps we should start a book club! Especially ones that turn into movies. Would be great to catch a movie together someday. 🙂

    2. That sounds great!

I hope you enjoy reading The Hobbit. Let me know your thoughts on it!

OMGLITZY: Tutorial: Faux Corset

Tutorial: Faux Corset

If you’ve ever looked up high quality corsets then you’ll find that they are also high in price. I wanted to attend the local Renaissance festival as a fairy this year and pictured a corset to go with my outfit. I decided to use what I know best – craft foam! Sheets of craft foam are so cheap (like less than a $1!) so if I messed up then I wouldn’t feel too bad about it. This tutorial is quite simple, but you will need some basic sewing knowledge. The corset itself doesn’t actually squeeze your waist. It’s more like a belt to be honest. But I think it gives a nice Renaissance look without the uncomfortable feeling a real corset has.

The first thing I did was look up what style of corset I wanted to make. I decided to go with an “under bust” that had a pointed top and bottom. This gives the illusion that it’s a corset rather than if it were just straight across like a belt. I cut my shape out of a sheet of craft foam and used a hole puncher on one edge of each piece. This is where you’ll eventually lace it up. Make sure your holes are big enough for whatever type of string or ribbon you’ll be using. For my decoration I drew swirls with a sharpie first to see a pattern. Then I went over my swirls with hot glue for a 3D effect.

After you’re done with all the hot glue decoration, paint your foam with Gesso. This acts as a primer for your paint. I didn’t put any Gesso on the back of mine, but I would recommend it because it also strengthens the foam.

Once your Gesso is dry, paint your corset any color you’d like. I was going for a “woodland fairy” look so I decided to make my corset resemble leather. I painted the whole thing brown first, then used a sponge to add the gold and little bits of metallic green highlights.
You’re probably wondering how you’re going to actually *wear* this faux corset! For this I held up my two foam pieces to my stomach and marked where the back edge was on my sides. Then I measured the back of my waist from side to side. Then I was able to cut my fabric and hem the edges.

Since I might want to change out the color of this fabric some day, I decided to glue velcro to the fabric and corset edge. This is also handy because it makes it easier to take your faux corset on and off since you won’t have to undo the lacing.
The lacing is a brown cord I had in my craft drawers, but I think a colorful ribbon would look pretty, too.
And that’s how you make a faux corset! I don’t think anyone would know it’s made from craft foam do you? So very comfortable and versatile!
Coming soon is a tutorial for my flower crown and fairy wings. I made both from easy craft supplies, too!
Update: Here is the Fairy Wing Tutorial! 🙂

Tutorial: Wonder Woman Cosplay Costume

She is brave! She is fierce! She is .. Wonder Woman! I chose to make a Wonder Woman cosplay to wear to the Dallas Comic Con (now called Fan Expo Dallas) because I wanted to wear a costume that was fun, colorful and a character I admired. I feel like no other comic book superhero fits that criteria better than Wonder Woman! So if you have ever considered making this cosplay for yourself here is my tutorial/walk through/guide of how I made mine!

You always want to start out with a reference photo. Wonder Woman has had several alterations to her costume over the years, but for myself I wanted to wear a skirt rather than extra short bottoms. My costume isn’t based off of one specific Wonder Woman costume, but rather a mix of many to fit my tastes. This is another reason she appealed to me since I could make it my own and feel comfortable wearing it, but still be recognizable as the character.
After I researched several reference photos, I began my hunt for a red corset and blue skirt. Sure you could make these from scratch if you want, but due to time and money I usually have a “semi-homemade” attitude. There’s nothing to be ashamed of if you don’t make every single detail from scratch! So I turned to Amazon and found a corset and skirt that were in my size and would be delivered in time. I made sure not to buy a corset that buttoned or had latches in the front. From past experience, zipper fronts are a lot easier for me to put on when buying a cheap corset. More expensive and well-made corsets have great latches/hooks, but like I said, I was on a budget.
What I used:
Corset – Amazon – $35
Blue skirt – Amazon – $20
Red boots – Amazon – $46
Craft foam
Gold and silver cord
Gesso primer
Gold and silver spray paint
White frabic paint
Medium/large star stamp
Red paint (for the star on crown)
Hair combs (also for the crown)
Scissors
Hot glue gun
Hole puncher
Velcro strips
The first thing I did was make patterns of all the armor. Most of the patterns I drew myself onto newspaper, but the W logo for the chest piece I printed from the internet. A simple google search will bring up lots of great logos you can base your armor off of.
Then I cut all the armor pieces out of craft foam and used hot glue to attach the layers together to give it more dimension. If you bend the foam AS you glue it you can give it a curve so it holds whatever shape you want. Also, I punched holes in the back of the belt and gauntlets so I would have a place to put the cord that will hold them together.
When you are ready to paint your armor, be sure to prime it first with Gesso. I did about two coats of Gesso, let it dry completely, then spray painted with Krylon Foil Metallic.

This was after just one coat of the Krylon spray paint and no sealer. I loved how shiny it was!
I used silver cord and gold cord to lace up my gauntlets and belt. This made adjusting the fit very easy while wearing the armor.
The chest armor was fixed to the front of my corset with velcro. I hand stitched velcro to the corset and glued the other side of the velcro to the back of the armor. I did this because I couldn’t glue the armor straight to the corset since it zips up the front. Also, I didn’t want to ruin the corset in case I decide to use this for something else someday. I can easily unstitch the velcro if needed.

The lasso is a larger gold cord and was worn on the side of my hip by hand stitching a little piece of velcro to the corset. I liked using the velcro because I could easily take the lasso out if I wanted to pose differently in photos. For the crown, I hot glued two hair combs to the back of it. These fit securely into the net of your wig or hair.
My skirt was awesome! It was slightly longer in the back and had a comfortable waistband. I laid it out on my kitchen table and used white fabric paint and a star stamp to decorate it. The yellow post it notes were used so I could measure out where to put each star. Be sure to let it dry fully before you try it on.

The wig I used was a really dark brown wig I bought several years ago from a cheap store in the mall. It had more curls than the other black wig I owned so I went with it! I would recommend the Ferrari in Black from Arda Wigs, though, if you need to buy one. And my makeup was inspired by this tutorial by Kristen Leanne. It’s similar to Taylor Swift’s in her Bad Blood video.

And that’s how you make a Wonder Woman cosplay! I hope this tutorial was helpful, and if you have any questions feel free to ask in the comments! If you use my guide to make a Wonder Woman costume be sure to send it to me so I can share it! 🙂

Wizard Wand Tutorial

Thanks to DeviantArt User *Majann for posting this SUPER COOL tutorial to make wands like from Harry Potter!! I totally plan on cosplaying Luna Lovegood one of these days.. and I ALMOST bought her wand when I visited Wizarding World in Florida.
I made a wand once but it didn’t turn out nearly as cool as these! For mine (pictured above from 2010), I just bought a wooden dowel and an X-acto knife, carved it until it was kinda pointy at the end, then painted it brown and gold. But I am DEFINITELY going to try this tutorial for a more authentic looking wand.

  2. OMG! I know I have said this a lot already but you are so inventive and talented. These wands are sooo sooo rad. I am going to try making one this weekend. Soooooo soooo rad.

  3. allways use wet hands when touching the glue.
This is helpfull if you have to touch glue that still is hot.

Wet fingers on hot glue will prevent it from sticking to you / burn you.

When you touch warm glue with wet fingers, effect Wears of quickly and you must remember to make fingers wet Again b4 touching again-
From the old fart KK – WHO have used hot glue to lots of hobby stuff

2013 Convention Schedule

Ever since I drove 6 hours by myself to go to a Twilight Convention in 2009 I’ve been kind of addicted to them! There’s a thrill about the chance to meet your favorite TV hero or movie superstar even it’s just for a few minutes. The hours you spend in line to get those few minutes sometimes means just as much! You get to make some awesome friends and chat with other fans that are just as crazy as you are. I feel very much at home when I am at conventions. So I am already counting down the days to each one. Here’s a peek at some I hope to attend!

February 9-10

March 8-10

April 6 – May 27

May 17-19

A-Kon**
May 31- June 2

July 18-21

August 30 – Sept 2
DragonCon
August 30 – Sept 2
August 17-18

September 20-22

October 4-6

Texas Renaissance Festival
October 6 – November 25

** Indicates I will definitely be there!

Have you ever been to any of these conventions before? Do you go in costume? I do! Did I miss any that I need to check out? One reader suggested the ATX Televison Fest in Austin. And on a musical note, I’d really like to go to SXSW someday.

  5. That's quite a list!

I've only been to the Texas Ren Fest. And I haven't dressed up. Yet. It's always a great experience though! The Highland Fling weekend is great, but it probably doesn't have as many costumes.

Maybe this year I'll check out the Scarborough Ren Faire. I'll have to check my calendar! Do they do themed weekends or anything like that? Are there certain weekends that are better to attend than others?

    ReplyDelete

    Replies

    1. There are themed weekends but it's not as big as the Texas Ren Fest. Although, I think there's a pirate weekend and people usually stay true to that! I can't seem to find a list of all the themes…. Last year I went on during the "romantic" weekend (not what it's really called) and the special was that you could renew your vows at the chapel! Haha!! You for sure need to dress up at least once.. I bet you will want to every time then! 😛

    2. The Texas Ren Fest can't be beat. More vendors, food, pretty surroundings, entertainment, did I say food! Try dressing up. Get a costume there. Pick a weekend you haven't been to.

    1. Thanks for adding these, Michael!! I am not sure I can handle Texas Frightmare Weekend – I am kinda a scaredy cat!! But I plan on going to the MLG Championship for sure! I've been trying to get better at League of Legends.. My name on there is Audeley if you play!

    2. There's one more event I'd like to add, the ScrewAttack Gaming Convention this June. Adam Sessler and Lisa Foiles will be there:

      http://sgconvention.com/

If you don't know what it is, ScrewAttack.com is a video game related website that produces their own shows and content. They're a network similar to Machinima.com and Revision3. And they're based right here in the DFW area (Flower Mound to be exact).

The only catch about this convention is that it's only the third one. The last time they held it was way back in 2010 and Uwe Boll was their special guest. They had to put the convention on hiatus for the past three years due to lack of funding.

I found out about this convention last month because I went to Video Games Live in January and the founder and owner of ScrewAttack, Craig Skistimas, showed up and gave all 1,500 people in the audience a free pass to their convention.

      Delete

    3. Whoa that's pretty cool of them to give out passes!! I think someone else has mentioned ScrewAttack to me before. Looks like a pretty cool website. I just bought my MLG spectator pass! So I'll definitely make it to that. How is the turn out on Friday nights? I was probably just going to go Saturday afternoon.

      Delete

    4. I went all three days last November and turnout was the same throughout the event. Same thing when I went Spring 2011.

I think part of the reason why it's steady is because most of the people there are actually competing. People like me who just come in to spectate are usually in the minority. This was also my experience when I went to Cyberathlete Professional League five years ago (before they went bankrupt). Also, unlike most other conventions MLG doesn't sell 1-Day passes.

Sunday's always the most interesting because all the brackets are done and everyone stands around to watch the finals.

  7. I am soo keen to see your costumes from all of them. Please tell me your dressing up for the Vampire Diaries. God I love that show.

Loot Crate Unboxing: February 2014

I didn't make an unboxing video for this Loot Crate box because I wanted to open it right away! A couple of my friends got their boxes a day earlier than me and said my picture was in the magazine inside this month's box! I wanted to see it for myself so I dived right in!

Purple and Green Hair

I finally told myself it was time to try green hair! I've done turquoise before, but have been a little nervous to do green. I didn't want it to look like pool water. I am very happy with how it turned out! Here's some info on the process I used to achieve this look.

Valentine’s Day 2014

For Valentine’s Day this year my parent’s surprised me with lots of chocolate goodies!

Also, the day before we went shopping at the mall, and I picked out a few toys. ^.^
I have had my eye on Rapunzel’s Lego Tower since it was released!

I wasn’t expecting to get Cinderella’s Castle, too, but my mom got it for me! It looks beautiful! Also, under Pixie are my new Rapunzel and Ariel towels from the Disney Store.

Later that day I put the Tower together. It was a lot of fun and didn’t take me as long as I thought it would. There are so many pieces in these things!!

Here is look at the inside. It comes with paint brushes, a frying pan and even Pascal!

Surprisingly, I don’t have a lot of Disney decorations on my shelves so I am excited to put this on display. Cinderella’s Castle has more pieces so one of these days when I have time I will put it together, too!

It was a peaceful and fun Valentine’s Day. I enjoy spending holidays with my family 🙂

DIY: Rapunzel Bulletin Board

I have been using a plain brown bulletin board for many years, and it finally occurred to me that I should paint it! I decided to give it a Rapunzel inspired look. This only took me about an hour to do and was so easy and fun!
Supplies needed:
Bulletin board
Paint of your choice
Paint brush
Newspaper
Notecards
Glue
Glitter
Jewels

First, I laid out some newspaper so I wouldn’t make a mess. Then, I used notecards to stick around the frame so I wouldn’t get paint on the cork board. Next, I painted the frame with metallic purple and sprinkled fine glitter one it while it was still wet.
(Tip: Put a phone book under your bulletin board so it won’t stick to your newspaper after you paint it)

I picked out jewels to match Rapunzel’s colors which are purple, pink, yellow and gold (orange)

Then, I would put a dot of glue on the frame and stick my jewels to it.

You can put how ever many jewels as you want. You could also use little stickers if you don’t want to mess with glue!
After I let my frame dry over night, I hung up my bulletin board and pinned some of my favorite things to it!

Have you ever taken something from boring to fabulous?
Let me know what you’ve remodeled!

Dallas Sci Fi Expo 2014

This year for Dallas Sci Fi Expo I dressed up as Shredder from TMNT and decided to film some of my adventure! Last year's expo was one of my favorite cons of the whole year. I was really looking forward to attending again and seeing all my friends!
The guest list was quite impressive. I recognized all of the names and was surprised by a few of them. Karen Gillan who played Amy Pond in Doctor Who was there along with Richard Dreyfuss who was in Jaws. I was most excited to see Stephen Amell who stars in the tv show Arrow. Sadly, I didn't get a VIP ticket this time so I decided not to wait in the 2+ hour lines to get any autographs.
The event was still a lot of fun. I stood by Karen Gillan's table and she waved at me as she was leaving. I also saw a few of the Face Off contestants and took pictures of the Blues Brothers mobile. The only Q&A I was able to get into was for Stephen Amell. After I walked the cosplay red carpet I hauled butt upstairs and waited in line for a hour for a *chance* to get into the Q&A room. Thankfully I made it in right before he came on stage. I just finished season 1 of Arrow on Netflix, and I LOVE it! I am so glad I was able to at least see him talk.

For My Valentine

Happy Valentine's Day! I will be spending the day with my most beloved friend and companion – Pixie Doodle. She's even cozied up in my lap as I type this (Aww!) I absolutely adore her and can't imagine my life without my true love. Thank you, Pixie, for all the snuggles, nuzzles and purrs. I'd like to dedicate this post to you!

Happy Things #21

I just got back from Sci Fi Expo so I’ll be working on that post soon. For now here are lots of happy things to share with you! (Click on the photos to see them bigger.)
I have been working on decorating my room since I moved. Here is my makeup desk! I painted this myself and was using this in my salon. The moon mirror is from my room growing up that my parents thankfully kept. I love it!
I also love this colorful corner next to my bed. I think I might mount some shelves on that wall where the bulletin board is so I can put more toys and stuffed animals out. 😛

I am really late posting this but here’s a glimpse at some of the fun things I got for Christmas.

I found this Shredder Funko Pop! toy at the bookstore while at the mall. I would love to have all the turtles some day, too!

My hair is ridiculously thick and since I’ve been growing it out it’s really getting out of hand. I don’t think I’m ready to cut it yet so instead I bought some scrunchies to pull it up! These are so comfy to sleep in and add a pop of color to your outfit.

My mom taught me how to crochet when I was young, but I couldn’t find my crochet hook. So the other day I bought a new one and got some yarn! I learned how to make a flower from this YouTube video and attached a hair clip to the back. These Disney Princess inspired flowers and starfish rings are listed in my Etsy store

It was about this time last year that my dad and I began planning our trip to Disney World. So I think that’s why I am on such a Disney kick right now. We probably won’t be going back this year, so instead I am decking myself out in Disney gear. I got these awesome Little Mermaid leggings at Target for only $15! I even bought the movie on Blu-Ray and have already watched it twice.

When I found out one of my favorite tattoo artists Matt Van Cura was in town I knew I had to get something from him before he left. A couple years ago he tattooed my Harry Potter themed tattoo. It’s one of my absolute favorites. So I knew I could trust him to do an awesome job again. I got Ariel on my leg and am blown away by how amazing she came out. I love her so much!

This fun photo was taken at my friend Krystle Starr’s house. She and her fiancé needed some people to help film a video for All-Con. I had so much fun dancing and being goofy with all my friends! I went back a couple days later dressed as Ramona Flowers to film some more. You can watch the video here

My dad got tickets to a Dallas Stars hockey game for Christmas! I was so excited to go with him. We had pretty great seats and ate a ton of food. We were even featured on the big screen for a few seconds! I was happy the Stars won that night, too!
Pixie has been just as silly as ever. I love her so much =^.^=
The second picture is an app called Comic Touch 2.0. Maybe I’ll make a Pixie comic series!

What has made you happy lately? 🙂

North Texas Comic Book Show

About every 2 or 3 months there is a small comic convention show called North Texas Comic Book Show. I have seen many of my friends attend it so I decided it was time I check it out.
My friend Sean dressed up as Hawkeye, and I went as Black Widow. This was Sean’s first time to go, too.
The show was held in a smaller hotel near downtown Dallas, but had two big rooms filled with vendors.
In the rooms you could find vintage toys and loads of comic books. There were also quite a few artists to meet.
I found several good deals here, and would like to go back to see what treasures I could find next time.
There were a handful of cosplayers in attendance as well. This is Enasni Volz as Dr. Harleen Quinzel. She won the costume contest!
I’d like to dedicate this post to Chris Skiles. He is the cosplayer next to me dressed as Darth Nihilus. His costume played a sound recording of the character’s deep booming voice. While we were standing by each other during the costume contest I asked him what the recording was saying. He whispered to me that he wasn’t really sure, and we both laughed together. I know it was a very small moment, but it feels like yesterday that I shared it with Chris.
He was very active in our local cosplay scene, and I had the chance to see him at several other conventions. I couldn’t believe it when I heard that Chris passed away this week. He was only 30 years old, and I learned that he was also an Air Force veteran. At the Dallas Sci Fi Expo this Saturday several of us will be honoring Chris by wearing a white ribbon on our costumes. I didn’t know Chris well, but I have been touched by the opportunity I’ve had to meet new people through cosplay. My heart goes out to his friends and family.

Meet the Sponsors: A Bit of Geek

Hey everyone! I’m excited to share my first “Meet the Sponsors” post. If you’ve checked out my Sponsors page you’ll notice that anyone who purchases a Large Ad will be introduced in a blog post as well. A Bit of Geek is an incredibly fun and informative site that I am sure all of you will enjoy learning more about! Miranda has provided us with some info and links about A Bit of Geek. I was able to meet Miranda at PAX Prime so I couldn’t be more excited to welcome her and her colleagues as a sponsor.
~GlitzyGeekGirl~
A Bit of Geek started as a hobby outlet back in May of 2010. I’ve always loved to write, journal, and document, but more than that I love to share with other people! I would ramble on over on my LiveJournal and Myspace, but after parking it on Facebook I lost the ability to blog. So, A Bit of Geek was born! Over the past (almost) four years now I have been working on growing my little corner of internet. I have moved from blogspot to independent hosting and encountered a lot of problems. I now have my feet mostly planted in WordPress and I expect more changes this year as I continue to mold A Bit of Geek to my ideal website! Early in 2013 I invited three other writers to join me to help expand the available content and add diversity to A Bit of Geek’s voice. The four of us write in harmony about video games, board games, music, comics, crafting projects, TV shows, funny lists, and more. We updated every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday!
Readers can expect game reviews, personal opinions on industry trends, informative write-ups, lots of pictures, top ten lists, art videos, the occasional tutorial, our experiences at geeky events, and a whole lot of talking about the things that we love. We encourage and enjoy feedback on our articles as well as on our Facebook page! Getting a discussion going is one of our main goals and is certainly one of my favorite things. The future of A Bit of Geek includes more crafting projects and tutorials, more frequent video content (art, funny, and miscellaneous), a product or two for sale, and more giveaways for our wonderful readers!
A Bit of Geek can be found all over the web. We have a presence on YouTube, Tumblr, Twitter, Facebook, and even a Pinterest and Google+ page! We are most active on Facebook, Twitter, and Tumblr and are happy to answer questions.
To get a taste of the A Bit of Geek experience, here are a few articles that I think really show us off!
Just one in a delightful series from Tom where he gives a fun and detailed rundown of a video game character.
A photo journey of my nephew’s 6th birthday party.
A hilarious list of very serious questions from Rachel.
A complete retelling of my magical night.
Zach gives a talk about the key role that music plays in our games.
A challenging and hair pulling list that Tom forced us to write, but now you all know us a little bit better!
And if that’s not enough, here are the two most recent videos that we’ve posted!
Thanks for checking us out! We hope to see you in the comments sections 😀

Meeting George Takei

A couple weeks ago the Dallas Comic & Pop Expo held a pre-event signing with George Takei! Madness Comics hosted it and they had a great turn out. George was in town to narrate the Sci-Fi Spectacular performance by the Fort Worth Symphony. I enjoyed hanging out with my friends Krystal and Sean as we browsed through the comics while we waited. George was very polite and excited to meet everyone.
This was my outfit for the event. My Nyan Cat hoodie is from ThinkGeek and my Batman leggings are from Hot Topic.

I didn’t mind waiting in line at Madness Comics because it is a really awesome comic book store. It’s huge! It used to be a Chuck E Cheese. Also, it was Friday so there was Friday Night Magic going on, lots of people to chat with and so many cool things to buy.

Dallas Comic & Pop Expo is a convention I’ve never been to. They were giving out 10% off ticket coupons, and I wish I had used it before it expired because Xander from Buffy the Vampire Slayer is going to be at this convention!! I might just have to try and go to meet him.

George chatted and shook hands with everyone. I was glad they allowed photography at the table so I could snap a few shots.
Here are my friends Krystal and Sean with George. This was the official photo Sean paid for.

Here I am with my freshly autographed Star Trek photo. I am excited to add this to my collection!
Another fun thing about this event was getting to meet the creator of Nyan Cat! Yes you read that correctly. It turns out Christopher Torres lives in the Dallas area! He was in line to meet George, saw me wearing my brightly colored jacket and came up to say hello. Then he gave us some Nyan Cat stickers and buttons! I don’t know if I was more excited to meet him or George Takei! lol
