2015 Year in Review

This year I've been a lot less active in the blogging universe than I have been in the past. But that doesn't mean I didn't have a productive year! I wanted to go ahead and round up some of my favorite memories from 2015. Off the top of my head I can remember lots of fun times with my family like going to baseball and football games, an art festival, the orchestra, and traveling around Texas. So let's jump right in and talk about a few highlights from the year!

Pixie’s Emergency Surgery

If you've been following my tweets, then you know Pixie had to go to the emergency vet a few nights ago. She had to have surgery done and is hopefully going to be feeling a little better soon. However, the vet bills hit unexpectedly. I set up a GoFundMe with more info on what happened and a way for Pixie's friends to send a few dollars her way.
Pixie and I appreciate any help. Even just happy thoughts!

Tutorial: Cinderella 2015 Cosplay

If you're like me then you totally fell in love with all the costumes in the new live action Cinderella movie! Lily James portrayed the princess perfectly! I knew right away that I had to have her dress in my life, but I was scared to take on such a project. Her dress is massive!! So with a little creativity I was able to recreate a version of that magnificent ballgown without breaking the bank. I realize I didn't make a 100% screen accurate cosplay and I'm okay with that. I still felt like a princess wearing this! I'm hoping this semi-homemade tutorial will help inspire someone else that might want to make Cinderella's gown. Enjoy!

Tutorial: Princess Anna Cosplay

Hi everyone! It's been way too long since I posted, and what better way to come back than with a cosplay tutorial! Halloween is right around the corner, and Frozen isn't going away any time soon so today I am sharing with you how I made my Princess Anna costume. I wore this cosplay to Animation Celebration last year and this past January I fixed it up a bit and took some better photos of it! I hope you find this tutorial helpful!

OMGlitzy! New blog! New name!

omglitzy.com

I’m excited to share that I have come up with a fun new name to go by – OMGlitzy! I’m still Glitzy and I’m still geeky, but I have felt like going by a different online handle for awhile now. I’m still going to update this blog with cosplay tutorials and giveaways, though. So don’t lose this bookmark! Since this site became cosplay centric and still gets lots of hits, I plan to keep it updated when I can. But my new blog www.omglitzy.com is going to be a little more random and a place for me to hopefully post more often without the pressure of making an epic post each time. What I mean is I started to feel like if I didn’t make a cosplay post with lots of photos, links, and information then no one wanted to read it. I didn’t want to clutter this site with random ramblings. I dunno, I am sure it’s just some weird blogger insecurity thing. But what I’m getting at is my new blog will be more laid back and easier for me to just chat about what’s going in my life!

I’ve already updated my Instagram and Twitter to my new handle – @OMGlitzy – but my Facebook and YouTube links will have to stay /GlitzyGeekGirl since they don’t offer name changes. I debated about how to handle my Twitch channel (since they don’t do name changes either) and ultimately decided that since I plan to stay pretty active on there that I would go ahead and make a new channel with my new name. So if you’d like to keep following me on Twitch head over to twitch.tv/omglitzy and give it a follow!

Thanks so much for staying interested in this blog while I’ve gone through some transitions this year. Coming soon here will be a Wonder Woman cosplay tutorial!

HUGS!!

What I’ve Been Up To

Hey everyone! It's been too long since I updated my blog! I think about it every day, but have just been busy with other new adventures lately. My blog was such a prominent part of my life for the last few years – it really has been hard taking a break from it. However, I would imagine most bloggers have to step back every now and then and give their brain a refresh. I'm ready to at least give you guys a little "What I've Been Up To" post!

Join Me on Twitch

My favorite game right now is Guild Wars 2, and just a few weeks ago I finally invested in a nice webcam so I could begin streaming my adventures in Tyria on Twitch! It’s been an incredible way to become more involved with the GW2 community, and I love that I’ve been able to meet new friends this way! I recently mentioned I would be taking a bit of a break from my cosplaying and blogging. So figuring out Twitch has given me a new past time that I’m really enjoying! You can still expect some cosplays and plenty of future blog posts, but if you want to check out my Twitch stream and chat with me live definitely follow my channel! You don’t have to play games to watch.. you could just come by and say Hey or ask me anything! 😀 And if you ARE a Guild Wars 2 player then you can expect some in-game items and gold giveaways! I already gave out a precursor last week!!! I’m even planning something pretty big for when I hit 1k followers.
Anyway, I just wanted to update you guys on what I’ve been doing lately! My Instagram/Twitter/Facebook have all stayed pretty up-to-date on my other shenanigans so give them a follow as well.. my name is @OMGlitzy on everything :p
http://girlhero.net
And if you are curious about learning how to Twitch and stream your own games then head over to my friend GirlHeroLori’s blog. She has some Twitch 101 posts with lots of great tips on setting things up, what programs and plugins to use, etc. She streams as well! And if you have a Twitch already leave your name in the comments so I can give you a follow back!

I've got a dream! I've got a dream!
It's to be a princess, of course! I had been looking for an affordable Rapunzel crown for quite some time but sadly could only find child sizes. So one night I decided to make the crown myself with whatever materials I had laying around.
And to help other lost princesses I decided to make a tutorial so you can become royalty as well!

Cinderella Inspired Outfit

The new live action Cinderella movie comes out in a few weeks (March 15, 2015) so I decided to put together an inspired outfit. I always end up wearing jeans and a hoodie when I go to the theater… so this is one of those “what I would like to wear” posts! It gives me an excuse to browse fashion websites and hopefully inspire myself to dress up!
This stretch knit skater dress looks so comfy! And for only $15 from Forever 21 your wallet can rest easy, too. The signature light blue color is the perfect hue for our Cinderella outfit.
Cinderella’s classic puffy shoulders are cute and all, but I love the new look of the live action sleeves. To replicate the ruffled neckline I found this glittery fringe scarf from Wet Seal.
It’s all about sparkle and shine for Cinderella, and you don’t need a fairy godmother when you have the internet. Charlotte Russe has these fabulous blinged out glitter tights which are sure to turn a few heads.
A glass slipper may be the key to finding your prince charming so don’t leave home without these gorgeous metallic slip ons also from Charlotte Russe.
Keeping track of the time is incredibly important especially once it gets close to midnight. So don’t be a minute late with this stunning butterfly watch from Mod Cloth.
Complete your look with loose wavy hair and wearing this lovely butterfly headband from Claire’s.

Are you excited to see the new Cinderella movie?
Will you be dressing up?

Glitzy Geeky Jewelry

They don't call me "Glitzy Geek Girl" for nothing! If there's one thing I love most it's jewelry! I've always been drawn to shiny and sparkly accessories. My collection has grown quite a bit over the years, and for this blog post I wanted to showcase a few of my favorite "geeky" jewelry items.

PAX South 2015

Since my first visit to PAX Prime several years ago, I have been anxiously awaiting my next chance to attend another PAX convention. When they announced a new location to their schedule here in my home state of Texas I couldn’t contain my excitement! I bought tickets as soon as they became available and counted down the days until the con.
It’s now been a few weeks since my visit to PAX South in San Antonio, but looking through my photos have brought back all the wonderful memories. I went to Prime by myself so I was really happy to go to South with my family. We are all first and foremost gamers. My mom and brother especially! So it was super special to be able and share this convention with them and nerd out over all the games and merchandise.
After the 5 hour trip from Dallas to San Antonio, we checked in to our hotel and walked next door to the convention center. To me that is one of the best things about PAX conventions is how they place the events in large centers around great hotels and fantastic night life. We headed straight in and to the Nintendo booth to try and grab a paper Majora’s mask souvenir. It was already gone for the day, but we did manage to get one the next morning!
Another great thing about PAX is the chance to try out new and upcoming games. My mom and I played the demo for Dungeon Defenders II and loved it! It was really colorful and interactive. I was so proud of my mom for trying out a PC game. She’s usually into console gaming. We were on easy mode but still enjoyed the gameplay and features. Plus we got a code for an early release and also a limited edition pin.
That evening we explored the rest of the convention center and checked out the Magic: The Gathering tournaments as well as some panels. I was excited to see my friend Mia Moore at the Women in Geek Media Panel!
The next morning I woke up really really early to get in line for the Guild Wars 2 panel. They weren’t letting people in the doors until 8am so my dad and I got there around 7:15am. There was already a line outside the building but once we got inside most everyone went a different direction than the main theater where the panel was to be held. So me and my dad and the two guys in front of us went straight to that queue and began our 2 hour wait until the panel started. Lucky for us we were awarded a Corsair Gaming Mouse for being one of the first 5 people there. I also got to meet two of Arena Net’s marketing team members and also cosplayer Sarah Cain who was dressed as a Guild Wars 2 character. The best part was seeing my face on the live Twitch stream. I was seated close to the front and in the center and my white hoodie and pink hair showed up nicely in the sea of black shirts. (See top right photo; I’m above his shoulder.) You can watch the stream here.
We spent the rest of the day collecting street passes on our Nintendo 3DS and then exploring some of San Antonio. My family and I ate at a great Mexican restaurant on the River Walk. Even though it was chilly it was just nice enough to be able to eat outside. Then we walked along the rest of the River Walk and found the The Alamo. I visited this once when I was very little but sadly don’t remember it. (How dare I not remember The Alamo!!) So I was very very excited to make up for it and take in all the history of this monument.
One of the best things about a PAX convention is all the free swag! I came home with SO many goodies! I bought a few of the collectable pins and adorable books they had and also a sticker sheet and patch. But literally everything else was free! I got Magic: The Gathering cards, the Majora’s Mask, lanyards, several coupon codes for online stores, and best of all a Guild Wars 2 Heart of Thorns shirt and pin!
:+:+:+:+:
This was a very memorable trip and one I am happy to have spent with my family. I am looking forward to PAX South growing and becoming bigger and better next year.

Glitzy Geek Update

You may have noticed my blog posts haven’t been quite as frequent, but have no fear! I am still here! I figured since several of you might come by to check this I’d give a little update on what’s up in my glitzy geeky life.
My blog began as a means for me to just express what was going on in my day to day life or stuff I shopped for and what not.. Then it blossomed into this exciting cosplay and craft tutorial hub! In 2014, I really went on a lot of great adventures to comic cons, concerts and other events. I feel like my blog focused on a lot of those things which is super cool because it’s so fun to go back and look at those posts.
This year, I plan to slow down a little bit on the cosplay lifestyle. I definitely would love to keep making things and dressing up, but I’d like to find a focus for my time and money somewhere new. That doesn’t mean I won’t make something or attend a comic con – because I definitely will! I love doing that! I just think I might try some new directions here and there.
The fun part is I don’t even know what that means! 😀 I actually don’t have much planned at the moment which is great because it leaves the door open for all sorts of opportunities. I have ideas in my head for blog posts that might be a tad more about some life experiences I’ve had (like being a cosplay guest, being a business owner, making friends on the internet) .. stuff like that! I just feel bad not posting a post with a ton of photos. I mean I’ve read blogger tips and most of them say don’t post a big wall of text. I don’t want my blog to completely change, but I do want to add some sort of new material to it.
So anyway that’s just some things that have been on my mind at the start of this new year. I do have a post coming soon all about PAX South in San Antonio and also a craft tutorial for my Rapunzel crown. As well as new giveaway prizes! Definitely come back soon for all those updates and more! I’m still here, I’m still geekin’ out, and I still love reading all your comments and getting to know all of you.
You can find me post pretty often on my Instagram, Facebook and Twitter, too!
Hugs to all!

March Thoughts

Another month has passed already?! It sure seems like 2016 is zipping by! I would have loved to have filmed March vlog, but there just hasn’t been enough time in the day to do so. I hope you don’t mind another blog post then! :o)

March actually was a lot happier than February. I was recovering from a lot of defeats and have taken time to reflect on how to improve myself. I made a list of some memorable moments from March so let’s dive in!

Dyed hair – One of the most exciting changes this month was dying my hair back to pink. Last October I shaved my head and have been letting it grow without any bleach or dye. It was getting about an inch or so long and was just a boring dark brown color. Since I don’t really have a plan on what to do with it, I decided to dye it pink again! Even though I still wear wigs from time to time, I enjoy having my colorful ‘do back.

Gaming – Let’s start with EQ Next. This is a game that was announced back when I attended SOE Live several years ago. I’ve always been a big Ever Quest fan and was really excited for EQ Next. Well sadly, they announced that the game will no longer be happening. It broke my heart to read about it. I may need to revisit EQ2 soon. In happier news, I’ve been playing a lot of Dragon Mania Legends which is a mobile app game that is very easy and addicting. In March, they released a new “Clans” feature where you can group with friends to earn new rewards. It’s one of the only mobile games I’ve actually stuck with now for a nearly year! Finally let’s get into a recap of Guild Wars 2. This month I decided to make the legendary shield The Flameseeker Prophecies. I had almost all the materials for it and really liked the design so I just went for it. A few days later the devs announced that they were postponing the release of new legendary weapons indefinitely! What!! So that means all this time waiting for the new weapons that they promised with the expansion won’t be happening after all. I admit I was pretty bummed about this news. I would have made the sword Bolt instead of the shield, but I was waiting for the new sword to come out. I guess that won’t happen so now I will be making Bolt next. Some good things that happened in GW2 was the new raid wing, the return of the Bunny Ears and the big giveaway party I hosted on my stream. I gave away lots of prizes and had a fun time in Lions Arch with my friends and guildies. I’ll be hosting a giveaway on the last Friday of every month so if you missed it you can join us for the next one!

Moving – You can read the whole story on this blog post. But the TLDR version is I made a trip down to Houston to look for an apartment and find a new job. I found a very nice place that would be available mid April so I made the jump and signed a lease! I’m nervous and a little sad to be leaving Dallas, but this will be a good opportunity for me. It will be fun to explore a new place and also get back in to the beauty industry for my career. So I am looking forward to the move. It’s just been very hectic now trying to organize, clean, and pack my things in preparation.

Divergent – I saw Allegiant in theaters this month. Here’s my mini review of the new movie: I’ve been a big fan of the books and really loved the first movie. The second movie was okay but seemed too heavy on CGI. I was hoping the 3rd installment of the series would redeem itself but it left me going home really unhappy. It’s like they totally forgot about telling a good story and focused all of their money and energy on visual effects again. Also, Tris just seemed very unlike herself and lost all of her character development. Many of the scenes and lines came off cheesy and nearly made me laugh (and not in a good way.) The only thing I enjoyed about the movie was Four. The actor played his role well and the character made smart decisions and looked like a badass. I enjoyed his moments more than any others, but it still wasn’t enough to get me excited for the last movie due next year.

Easter – It was a little weird having Easter so early. Isn’t it usually in April? My family and I kept things pretty laid back and decided to order pizza for the weekend. I also got some cute cards in the mail and had a great day!

Store – While cleaning out my room and closet I found tons of nice purses, jewelry and decor that I just no longer use -or never used to begin with – and decided to open a Storenvy! I have had 2 sales so far and hope that my other items will find a new home soon. The money will help go towards my move, too! omglitzy.storenvy.com

Pixie update – This actually happened today rather than in March but since it’s fresh on my mind I wanted to fill you in! I took Pixie in for her 2 month check up on the state of her gums and teeth and the vet said things are still looking good! I’m glad the few teeth she has left are doing alright so she won’t need any removed any time soon. I let the vet know that I am moving to Houston and it was a little sad to say goodbye. They’ve been a great clinic to go to and have really taken good care of Pixie. I hope I can find another nice vet in Houston.
That’s about all I can think of for March! Overall I would say it was a very good month. ^.^
Xoxo,
Glitzy

Wig Review! Kamo Wig from Amazon

Hey everyone! I made my first “review video” for my YouTube channel!!! It’s all about a wig I have been wearing a lot lately that I purchased from Amazon. As you may know, I own and wear a lot of wigs. I’ve been meaning to make reviews for them so I’m really excited to finally share this with you!
The Kamo 26″ Layered Wig was purchased from Amazon by ME! I was not paid or asked to make this review. I was looking for a natural wig to wear on my Twitch streams and came across it on Amazon. It had decent reviews and for only $16.99 I figured it was worth the try. Turns out it’s one of my all time favorite wigs now! I loved it so much I bought two – one to leave long and another to trim a little shorter. I’ve been wearing it a lot lately and it looks and feels very natural. Please check out my video for more details and a better look at it! This wig would be great for cosplayers or anyone that is on a budget and looking for a nice blonde wig.

Glitzy

Once Upon A Time Cosplay: Evil Queen Regina Costume

I am so excited to share with you all my Once Upon A Time cosplay of the Evil Queen Regina!!!
This cosplay is special to me because it's proof you CAN use a Halloween costume for cosplay! Anyone that says you can't is silly. Sure, I enjoy making a lot of my own stuff, but sometimes I just don't have the time or money to make an entire cosplay from scratch. I've used pieces from Halloween stores for several of my cosplays in the past. So when Costume SuperCenter contacted me about modeling one of their costumes, I couldn't have been more stoked!! Going through their gallery was a lot of fun, too. They have SO MANY to choose from for all genres and fandoms.
After narrowing it down, I finally chose the Elite Wicked Queen costume. I picked this because it's not something I would know how to make on my own. Evil Queen Regina from Once Upon A Time wears some exquisite dresses, and the time and money it would take for me to find patterns and fabrics would have been stressful. The costume came in a dress bag inside a well-packaged box.
**I chose a size Large – I'm 5'10 and about 145 pounds.**
More photos and lots of great details>>>

Review: Gothic Lolita Wigs

The latest wig I added to my collection is the Classic Wavy in Deep Pink by Gothic Lolita Wigs. Most of my wigs are from Arda, but I loved the length and light curl this wig offered. I have never ordered from GLW so let me tell you a little about it!
This is how it came shipped. It came in TWO days!! I was so impressed with how fast their shipping was. It also came with a wig cap, which I think is great!! I lose mine all the time!

I gently took it out of the package to show you how they had stored it. It wasn’t tangled or flattened at all.

This was after I ran my fingers through it to loosen the curls.

The inside of the wig has adjustable straps and 3 attached combs to help it stay secure while you wear it. Arda has the straps but not these combs. I loved this addition! Someone asked if these would fit larger heads, and I think it definitely will. Arda’s might be a little bigger, but I didn’t think this GLW wig was too snug at all.

This is me wearing it in my bathroom lighting. The pink is gorgeous!! Though it is called “deep pink” it is definitely more pastel in color.

I teased the bangs just slightly so they would stay to the side better. The hair strands stayed smooth and don’t have a fake shiny look to them.

After combing it with my wig brush the curls had a lot of bounce to them, too! I love the length and fullness of this wig.
Here is a picture of it in the sunlight!
So overall I give Gothic Lolita Wigs an A+! The price is just right for this quality and how fast it shipped. I will definitely be ordering more from them!
Do you have a favorite wig company?

Share Your Blog or Fav Blogs

“Nrrrd Grrrl” by Jessica Grundy – available on Etsy
Hi friends! This is kind of a different post than usual. I am hoping some of y’all can help me with updating my blog reading list!
Since I got a new computer, my bookmarks got messed up 🙁 So here’s your chance to post your own blog or one you like to read a lot!
These are a few of my interests:
Cosplay, comic cons, fashion, makeup, hair dye, cats, gaming, fantasy (elves, fairies, magic), book reviews, kawaii, DIY
What I’d really like to start reading more of:
*Disney – any bloggers that might live in Florida or California and have annual passes and post about their daily trips! Also, Disney inspired outfits and cosplays.
*Easy recipes – I’m trying to cook more often, but need lots of guidance. Any *really* simple cooking blogs for beginners would be great.
Even if your blog doesn’t fall into any of those categories, please post in the comments! I’d love to branch out more.
I’ve been trying to google search new blogs, but all I come up with are big named blogs with lots of ads. Thanks for your help, and I can’t wait to see what y’all post 🙂

Giveaway: Flying Packs Shirt

Flying Packs is a t-shirt company based out of San Francisco with a style any Californian would love. Being from Texas, I feel like we don’t get many original and hip shirts, so I was stoked when Flying Packs contacted me about their product! After reading their About section on their website I was immediately drawn to their motto “Don’t think outside the box, think as if there never was a box.” With a unique catalog of shirts to choose from, there’s no doubt males and females will find a stylish shirt to order.
I’m wearing the Flying Panda shirt in a size small and the fit was great! So many shirts run too small for my body type (I’m 5’10”), but I was so happy that the small fit just right. I paired it with a colorful undershirt and casual shorts – ready for a fun day by the pool.

I loved that there is no tag in the neckline, but rather a printed description. No itchy neck! Also, the shirts are 100% cotton and super soft to the touch. Do be careful when washing them, though, and use cold water to prevent any shrinkage.

I love my shirt so much that I want to share the greatness with you! One lucky winner will receive the black Flying Pig shirt I am holding in the photo above. Review: Kuzy Keyboard Cover

My Mac desktop had seen better days so I’ve been saving up to buy a new one for awhile now. I finally upgraded and have been loving my new computer! One thing I wanted to take extra care of was the keyboard. I never used a keyboard cover on my other computer and with all the Pixie fur and Pop Tart crumbs around my desk I really wished I had. So I checked out Amazon and found that the Kuzy Silicone Keyboard Cover had over 1,900 reviews and a 4 out 5 star rating! At only $6.95 and free standard shipping I just couldn’t pass up this deal. It even arrived a few days earlier than Amazon had predicted and was in my mail box 5 days after ordering.
It came well packaged in a bubble wrap envelope. The cover is designed to fit most MacBook laptops and since the newer desktops have the same keyboard design it fit it as well. (My old computer had the keyboard with the number pad, which I admit I sometimes miss.)

The silicone is very thin and flexible. I laid it on top of my keyboard with ease and found that it fit snugly around the keys. I did have to smooth my hand over it to make sure it was stretched from corner to corner well, but this took mere seconds to do. I like that the silicone extends passed the keys, too. Like I said earlier, I eat a lot of Pop Tarts and other snacks while at the computer so I’m glad this will help prevent crumbs from getting stuck under the keys. The cover also comes off with a simple lift to make for easy cleaning.

The colors are exceptionally vibrant! I chose the rainbow design, but it comes in 20 different colors. I’m curious how quickly the colors will rub off after daily use. For now I have only noticed a few color splotches on some keys, and I had to get up close to even see them. Typing feels a little different, but was easy to adapt to. You don’t feel or hear the click of the keys as much. My fingers don’t seem to move the cover at all though, and I still type just as fast as I did without it. Only con would be that the light on the caps lock key doesn’t show up as brightly when it’s on, but that’s minor.
Overall, I am incredibly impressed with the quality and cuteness of this keyboard cover. The best part is that it’s so affordable! I can’t even imagine not using it now. It adds a great pop of color to my desk, and I can relax knowing my keys are protected.

I want to mention that Kuzy in no way asked me to review their product. I found this on Amazon on my own and wanted to try it out!

Divergent Dallas Red Carpet + Giveaway!

I recently reviewed the first Divergent book and read the next two in the series within days. I became an instant fan so when I found out there would be a Red Carpet event from the official Divergent Facebook page I immediately sent in an email to see if I could get a press pass. The event featured Miles Teller and Jai Courtney who play Peter and Eric in the movie. Fans had the chance to get their autograph and then see a pre-screening of the film!

Loot Crate Unboxing: February 2014

I didn't make an unboxing video for this Loot Crate box because I wanted to open it right away! A couple of my friends got their boxes a day earlier than me and said my picture was in the magazine inside this month's box! I wanted to see it for myself so I dived right in!

Loot Crate Unboxing: January 2014

This was my first Loot Crate experience! Each month you get a box of goodies with a different theme of geek swag. The price is just under $20 a month. The January theme was “Launch” so everything in the box was kinda space related.

After seeing other people’s unboxing videos and pictures online, I noticed I didn’t get the Minecraft calendar. Pretty much everyone else did so I’m not sure why mine was missing.. especially since I didn’t get something different in it’s place. So I’m a little bummed about that.
To subscribe to Loot Crate please use this link – http://mbsy.co/lootcrate/1592413 -because they have a refer-a-friend program and it helps me out. They also post some discount codes on their Twitter. I saved 10% with the code EPIC.
I signed up for 3 months of Loot Crate. Even though I love the Funko Pop toy and the NASA patch, I hope the next box has more stuff in it I will use.
Also, HUGE congratulations to Hailee D. as the winner of my Scott Pilgrim Giveaway! Thank you to everyone that entered! This contest had the most entries ever.. so you guys totally rock! I already have an awesome prize lined up for my next giveaway so if you didn’t win this time be sure to check back soon. 🙂

Review: Fresh Brewed Tee

I recently teamed up with Fresh Brewed Tee and have an exciting review to share! If you haven’t heard of them they are a family owned company that offers geeky/pop culture t-shirts. They stand out from other t-shirt companies because they make each design in a variety of sizes for any body shape!

I’ve had trouble in the past with other companies because their sizes were ill-fitting. The girl shirts were way too small, the boys were too big .. It was very frustrating! So I am super pleased to tell you that the quality of shirt that Fresh Brewed Tee offers is great! When I first received my shirt, I noticed right away how thick the material was. The design was also printed incredibly well, centered correctly, and won’t be fading anytime soon. I can’t tell you how happy I am that a woman’s size fit me, too. I am pretty tall (5’9″) and have a long torso. I usually stay away from ordering girl sizes because they are almost always too short for me. And the larges will be way too baggy! This shirt I am wearing in the photos is a woman’s large and fits me perfectly. It wasn’t too baggy at all, was long enough to look great with jeans, and the softness of the shirt was super comfortable.
Plushies not included – But aren’t they cute! 😛
They have unique limited edition t-shirts that will cover any geek’s favorite fandom, and a design contest is available for artists to enter! http://www.freshbrewedtee.com
If you’re interested in purchasing a shirt from Fresh Brewed Tee then be sure to use this coupon code
 FBTGLITZYGEEKGIRL1
to save $1 when you order! It can be used more than once, too! Which is great since they regularly add new designs!

Book Review: Divergent

Divergent by Veronica Roth
After realizing I only finished one book series last year (The Mortal Instruments), I took immediate action and decided to start reading right away. I always try to complete a book before I see the movie, and since Divergent comes out in March I knew it was a good one to start with. Overall, if you’re a fan of The Hunger Games then I am sure you will like this book. The Hunger Games was a little bit more engaging and drew me in faster, but I still couldn’t put Divergent down. I tried my best to keep this whole review SPOILER FREE! Nothing written here can’t been seen in the movie trailer.
Divergent Faction Button Set by The Geek Studio on Etsy
Divergent is the first book in a series of three by Veronica Roth. In a nutshell, it’s the story of a 16 year old girl that lives in a unique government setting. There are five different factions that each person lives in. When you turn 16 you have to decide if you want to stay with your family in the faction you were born into or change to a different one and leave your family. For Tris (the main character) her simulation test that is supposed to tell her which faction she’d fit in well with doesn’t give her normal results.
Fan art by pebbled via deviantART
The book starts off a little slow. You don’t get too personal with Tris right away. She basically just describes her normal routine in her faction Abnegation. This faction values selflessness and results in a boring life for Tris. You do get a taste of her questioning her lifestyle. So you wonder what choice she is going to make about her faction.
Fan art by nikaworks via deviantART
Eventually, more action starts to happen. Most of the book is about the faction choice she made. It made me wonder if that was going to be the highest part. Well I was wrong! A major wrench gets thrown into the plans, and just when you think things are going well for Tris she learns new secrets about the government. After I got to this part I really HAD to know what was going to happen.
Fan art by nickelbackloverxoxox via deviantART
Alongside the action, a love story also blooms. I enjoyed how it was portrayed because it left you wanting more. Tris has grown up around little affection, and I liked seeing her character develop into a woman that is curious about her feelings. The guy she likes (his name is Four) is depicted as strong, brave, and sometimes menacing. However, we get to see his weaknesses. His vulnerablitiy
makes him seem real, and you end up liking him even more because of that.
Photo from Entertainment Weekly
The ending picks up pace very quickly, and you’re left on the edge of your seat. I’ve watched the movie trailer a couple times now, and I’m excited to see what scenes they keep. It’s got enough grit to it that I am sure guys will enjoy it and enough spirit that I know girls will, too. I actually know a few guys that read the book and said they liked it. So this story should have something for everyone.
:+:+:+:+:
I already bought Insurgent and Allegiant, which are the next books in the series. I will probably not write a review on them since I don’t want to spoil the first movie for anyone. I wouldn’t be surprised if I read the last book by the end of the week!
Watch the trailer for Divergent here and order the book here.

Movie Review – Thor: The Dark World

Theatrical release poster; Walt Disney Studios
As you can tell from my previous post, I was pretty excited to go watch the second installment of Thor in theaters. I had made a winged headband to wear as I cheered on Thor and Loki in their adventures! I will keep this short and sweet and spoiler free!
I actually had not seen the first Thor movie until a few days ago. Luckily, my nearby Redbox had it to rent. So I made some popcorn and checked it out. I knew I was an instant fan of Thor after watching The Avengers. He and Captain America were my favorites due to their stunning good looks and gentlemanlike qualities. (Hey, they’re my type ok!) But truthfully, Thor appears to me as a true hero. He’s big, buff, kind, and genuinely looking out for the good of his people. And his role in Thor: The Dark World confirmed all of that for me.
Marvel.com
First, the movie has an overall comedic feel. Which I loved! I laughed out loud at so many different parts. And I never felt like the lines came off as cheesy. Many of the funniest moments weren’t even spoken lines (like where Thor puts his hammer at the apartment) .. That was hilarious! I’m glad they included cameos of other characters, too. That was a nice touch to get a laugh out and also a glimpse at some of our other favorite super heroes.
Marvel.com
Second, the movie had a great message. I feel like Thor and Loki’s relationship has excellent balance. This makes the movie more of a family film. It shows that a family may be complicated, but love doesn’t disappear, no matter how evil you might be. I especially enjoyed Rene Russo’s performance as Frigga. Her scenes were so moving and heartfelt that even Loki feels it. And I liked that I understood what I just watched. I didn’t leave the theater wondering why someone did something or what was that meant for. It was an enjoyable story to follow.
Marvel.com
Finally, the action was just right. I’m comparing this to how I felt after Man of Steel. Superman straight up destroyed everything. And I had a hard time enjoying the mass chaos. I’m all for some good fight scenes, but too much and I’m a little turned off. The scenes in Asgard had a magical feel to them with the use of a more medieval touch. I enjoyed seeing the close up punches rather than who can throw the other into the farthest building.
So to conclude, I would probably say the two Thor movies combined have made it one of my favorite super hero story lines. The actors and actresses meshed well, the special effects brought another world to life, and the subtle love story resonated with me. I’d say this movie has something for just about everyone!

The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones: Movie Review

If you've read any other reviews about the first movie in The Mortal Instruments series then you must think it isn't good. Well I saw the movie last Thursday and I ABSOLUTELY LOVED IT. However, I prepared myself by expecting a bad movie. I mean.. that's what all the reviews were saying! Even fan's comments on the official Facebook page were saying it wasn't good. So I have this theory that I went into the movie expecting it to be bad .. and it exceeded my expectations! LOL  .. But seriously.. I loved it! I've read the first two books and I'm halfway through the third one. There's already 5 out and a 6th one coming May 27, 2014.

My outfit when I saw the movie!

So I'm going to give a quick little SPOILER-FREE review here, then I'll give another more in depth review. If you're looking for a fantasy action movie with some chick flick romance then this is it. I love vampires, werewolves, angels and demons, etc.. so the dark characters intrigued me. It's seriously got some cool action! There are demons that are so real looking it scared me and fight scenes with some serious skills involved. I think guys will enjoy that side of the movie and girls can enjoy the lovey dovey teenage romance that blooms between the main characters. It's NOT LIKE TWILIGHT. Sure it's a young boy with superpowers and a young girl that lives a normal life.. but the dynamics definitely change later on. I'd also like to point out the acting didn't suck in this movie. It was a great mix of humor, drama and suspense. I loved that Clary is shown all roughened up from the fight scenes with wet, dirty hair and messed up makeup. She came across very real to me. My only complaint with the actors was Magnus Bane. His performance was very dull .. and he's supposed to be quite an eccentric character. He sounded like he was just reading lines off paper. *yawn* … But the casting for Jace was spot on to me. He was just sarcastic enough to be funny, but incredibly brave and heroic to make it easy to fall in love with him. And finally my last thumbs up goes to the soundtrack! I have had it on repeat since I got it last week! My favorite songs are by Colbie Caillat, AFI, and Jessi J … this soundtrack is also sure to please both guys and girls. The romantic songs are sweet and touching.. while the techno/rock songs are sure to get you dancing in your chair. In all, this movie was magical, gothic, suspenseful, and fun. I enjoyed it a lot and I plan on seeing it again!

OMGLITZY: Life Update: Houston, Pixie, and Guild Wars 2!

Life Update: Houston, Pixie, and Guild Wars 2!

Hey all! I know it’s been too long since I updated! Sorry about that! I think of all these cool posts in my head when I’m not at the computer but when I sit down to type the words don’t seem to flow. I’ve just been busy with real life things lately.
As I have mentioned before, I moved from Dallas to Houston a few months ago. I mostly moved here for family reasons but also because I thought I had some good leads on jobs. Unfortunately it just hasn’t worked out in my favor. I applied at over 20 places and none of them were meant to be. I was at a salon for a little bit but it’s hours did not work with my schedule. I’m spending time now focusing on my family and dealing with some other personal things before I dive back into the job search.
I also found out this week that Pixie is going to need surgery again. She has tooth resorption and last fall she had a serious accident where her top canine broke off due to decay and she developed a fistula. She had most of her teeth extracted except for her two bottom canines and a couple teeth in the back. I’ve been taking her to see a vet about once a month to make sure it doesn’t get worse. When I moved to Houston, the new vet I visited barely looked in her mouth and never called me back. I didn’t want to go back to him so I found a different one this week and really liked her a lot. This vet looked at Pixie’s mouth very closely and decided it would be in Pixie’s best interest to have all her remaining teeth extracted. Things have progressed rather rapidly again. Her gums are very inflamed and seem to be rejecting her bottom canines. The teeth are literally being “pushed up and out of her gums” and are likely to break off soon if not taken care of. It’s also very painful. The good news is she doesn’t have any infections yet since I caught it early this time! Pixie is scheduled to have her surgery this coming Monday, and we are all hopeful that this will finally put an end to her gum issues.
In some other super good awesome news – I got a partnership with Guild Wars 2 and ArenaNet!!! This means if you use my links to buy Heart of Thorns or try the free to play version a small portion will directly support me!! This was a dream come true and has been a complete honor to be a part of. I have been able to meet amazing people in this community and that has honestly been the greatest reward. The game has some very exciting updates coming soon with Living World Season 3 being launched on July 26. So it’s a great time to check it out!
I do plan to eventually apply for a Twitch subscribe button again. My numbers have increased since the last time I applied, but now the problem is I don’t have a set streaming schedule. I don’t really have time to be consistent during the week besides Monday nights. I hope to change this as soon as I can, but of course family needs to come first. So I appreciate everyone that does tune in whenever I am live!
More random things I’ve done lately can be seen on my Instagram or Twitter. I went to the Houston Aquarium for my brother’s birthday, checked out my first Houston comic con – Comicpalooza, saw a Houston Astros baseball game and have actually been getting some exercise with PokemonGo. Dealing with anxiety and stress can be hard but I am thankful for all the good moments I’ve had. 🙂
Thank you all that have kept in touch with me on social media! Hope you have a good week!!
XOXO,
Glitzy

My Birthday 2013

I am officially another year older, but I definitely still feel like a kid! 🙂 I am glad my birthday reflects my childlike qualities, too. I had a lot of fun with my family just hanging out and enjoying the day.

I decided to wear this dress from Hot Topic (I got about 3 years ago) and a Tarina Tarantino necklace.

My shoes were my first birthday gift! They are Uggs and SO COMFY! I got them a few days early so I could wear them sooner 🙂
My dad surprised me with a donut that morning! They didn’t have any with sprinkles so we had to make our own. It tasted great!

I am moving soon so all those plastic tubs are my costumes lol .. But it made a good area for my presents to be displayed.

Pixie had a birds-eye view of the party!

I was looking forward to playing Animal Crossing because your villagers throw a birthday party for you! I’m so glad my favorite villager, O’Hare, surprised me.
(Tip: Be sure to visit Club LOL the Saturday before your birthday so KK Slider can give you a copy of the song KK Birthday!)

O’Hare, Fuchsia and Antonio all came to my party!

Back in real life… my family and I ate at the Olive Garden! I love ordering their spaghetti and eating a million breadsticks.

Then we came back home and opened my gifts. Pixie was having a blast playing with all the tissue paper. But she eventually wore herself out!
A few of the things I got were a Pokemon tshirt, a Doctor Who scarf, a Teemo hat, and chocolate! My parents also surprised me with tickets to see ICE! at the Gaylord Texan. It didn’t open until a week after my birthday. I can’t wait to share that adventure in another blog post.

My cake was from Nothing Bundt Cakes and was soooo cute. The flavor was red velvet, and they put the sweetest princess hat on it. It was delicious!
:+:+:+:+:
So I had a really fun birthday! I am such a kid at heart and look forward to playing with all my gifts.
Do you have special plans on your birthday?

OMGlitzy! New blog! New name!

omglitzy.com

HUGS!!

Pinterest Enthusiast

As most females are these days, I am quite the Pinterest enthusiast. I have 26 boards of different themes that I enjoy “pinning” inspirational or creative photos to. Most of the time I am pinning hair and fashion ideas. But it’s a great place to organize your favorite pics of any category. Here are some of my recent favorites!

Pinterest would be a great tool for a dating website. It shows places I want to visit, my favorite foods, my style,  favorite music and things I love to geek out to! It’s all about me! If you don’t agree with my pins then we probably aren’t a good match 😛

It’s also great because it will usually take you to the source of each photo. So if you see a hair tutorial you like you can click the pic and it’ll link you to it’s original website. All the above photos can be found on my Pinterest and most have the source attached. Do you have a Pinterest account? Recommend any I should follow?

  1. These are awesome! Just went to follow your pinterest boards! =)

Hehe I really like your comment about it totally being a great tool for a dating website. So true!

Quick Hair Tip: Extensions

Q: I have been thinking about getting extensions, but this would be my first time and I know at Regis you guys only do the clip ins which is cool. The thing that worries me is getting them to look right when I am putting them in everyday. I was also curious as to whether or not you can highlight them? I originally wanted to come see you for a cut and blonde highlights, but am leaning towards extensions, so I wasnt sure how the whole highlighting thing would work.

A: There’s a few types of extensions .. Clip in will be the least damaging to your hair, however, they don’t stay in long. It’s typically pretty hard to sleep in them and wake up with them in the same spot. So they’re good if you just need them for the day. Even if you were to glue them in they would only last about a week or two. Bonded extensions last a lot longer – 3-6 months – but are really expensive. I wouldn’t recommend highighting any type. Even if the extension is human hair the color results aren’t guaranteed to match. I suggest coloring your own hair the color you want and get extensions to match it. They make hair that has different tones in it, too. Hope that helps some! 🙂

Shredder Cosplay Tutorial

TONIGHT I DINE ON TURTLE SOUP!

So last October I decided I wanted to make a Shredder cosplay to wear to the Dallas Sci Fi Expo in February! I chose this character because I am a big Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle fan. Since I wasn’t sure how to make a turtle costume, I decided Shredder would be awesome! Also, I enjoyed making armor for my Fiona cosplay and wanted to try it again.
This is a fairly simple costume. Overall, it was super cheap for me since I used sheet foam for nearly everything. If you wanted it sturdier you could use Worbla. I’ve also seen it made out of cardboard and duct tape.
In this tutorial, I explain how I made the armor, helmet, tunic and cape.

WARNING – PICTURE HEAVY!!!

Be sure to click on a picture to make it bigger if you need to see it better!

I decided to make the version from the 1987 TMNT animated TV series.
ARMOR
The first thing I did was freehand a design on paper for the armbands, leg guards and fists.
I traced my design onto sheet foam and cut them out.
Then I painted them with gesso.
Using my paper patterns, I cut out another round of armor from sheet foam, but this time cut the center out so I could glue a border onto my first pieces. Then gesso again.
I wanted the blades to be really thick so they wouldn’t bend, wobble or break off. So I found that these “door hangers” were made of extra thick foam and perfect!
I freehanded this design onto the foam and made 4 long spikes for the fists.
Then I made 28 little spikes for the rest of the armor. Omg this took forever.
The 8 loose spikes at the top are for the shoulders. Those will be explained soon.
I glued all the spikes on.
Then I gesso’d the spikes.
Pixie helping!
Since I didn’t want the shoulders to be flat, I ordered a kid’s football shoulder gear from Amazon for $9. They were made out of plastic and light weight.
So I glued on the spikes, gesso’d them, and eventually take them off the black thingy. I end up using velcro to attach these to my shoulders. I just put a strip of velcro on the inside of that little flap and on the top my shirt.
This was the silver metallic spray paint I used for all the armor.
I spray painted the top and underneath sides.
This next step was me just winging it. I needed a way to wear the armor and wasn’t sure if sheet foam would be sturdy enough. So I bought some cheap tube socks, cut them, put some fray check (it’s like a light glue) on the edges so they wouldn’t fray, then spray painted them silver.
I glued the socks to the back of my armor.  It worked great for the arms and fists, but not the legs which I will explain soon.
To give the arms a rounded feel I put them over a Pringles can and some rolled up posters and let them sit like this for a couple days.
Here are the armbands and fists. They are tight and comfy and won’t slip. I know it doesn’t look fantastic but in person you really can’t tell since they are underneath.
The sock idea didn’t work for the legs because I couldn’t slide them over my boots. Duh! So instead I used sheet foam and velcro.
These fit great over my boots. I painted the band silver, too.
HELMET
I used is a kid’s construction helmet from Hobby Lobby. It’s made out of foam so of course it’s suuuuper light weight. I made a pattern out of paper and tape to figure out how I wanted the spikes to look. Shredder’s helmet is kinda boring in the cartoon (it’s very flat) so I took some creative freedom here. I wanted it to be more angular like his newer helmets.
I traced my pattern onto more sheet foam and glued it onto the helmet. Then I trimmed the front bill and added a point in the middle.
Next I made the side and back panels out of foam and glued them to the inside of the helmet. Then I gesso’d it.
Then I glued the panels together.
I sprayed painted it the same color as the armor.
Pixie helping!
MASK
The mask is made using a surgical mask from Walmart. I got a box of 20 for like $3.
I traced out a shape I liked that would cover the front of the mask and have a bit to cover the nose then glued it on. I only put glue on the edge so it would stay smooth. Then gesso it and spray paint it!
TUNIC
My tunic was a long sleeve dress I got from American Apparel. Any grey shirt/dress would work. I got this one because it was form-fitting and long. I lined up the sides of the dress and pinned it together. Then cut out a small slit. Do not cut this too big!
Hem the edges and be amazed at how much it will stretch open. That’s why I said don’t cut too big 😛
CAPE
I had a rough time finding purple fabric. No idea why! This one was the best I could find.
Basically I left it a long rectangle and just hemmed the edges twice. I made a big opening for the neck. I say big because you want it to be really draped looking in the front.
MAKEUP
For my eyes, I used a lot of black eyeliner and smokey grey eyeshadow. Around the edge of the grey I did a little bit of red eyeshadow to make it look more evil! I also made my brows thicker and darker and put on a lot of mascara.
All of these photos were taken by my mom and edited by me. The belt, boots and leggings were items I already owned.
So that’s it! Now it’s time for TURTLE SOUP! Muwahaha!
I will be wearing this cosplay all day Saturday February 8th at the Dallas Sci Fi Expo.

I also made a short, silly video of me in costume you can watch here.

Be sure to let me know if you use this tutorial to make a costume! 🙂

  16. Did the face mask make you feel smothered? Everything looks fantastic, but using the surgical mask with I'm guessing was a piece of foam over it,seems like it would be really suffocating. Was it breathable? It looks really good, just concerned it would be hard to breathe in.

  17. i love the idea of using a kids construction helmet! i was stuck on what to use for that. I also love the idea of using socks to keep the armor on, instead of elastic! awesome job!

    1. I am not really sure how to explain how I measured it. I have a habit of "just winging" it .. I kind of just eyeballed how big of a gap I needed.. made sure it was long enough to barely drag the floor.. and then when I wore it I had my mom safety pin it to my shirt. I know that probably doesn't help you much! Sorry but good luck and be sure to send me a pic 🙂

The Hobbit

When The Hobbit was released, I was kinda bummed I couldn’t make it to the midnight premiere.. I usually like to dress up for those! So it’s been on my to-do list to go see the movie .. Last night I finally got to!! The theater was still pretty packed, and it’s funny to see mostly males rather than females (since I usually go to chick flicks) in the seats. I haven’t read the book yet – that’s on another to-do list – but I still really enjoyed the movie. I’ve been told they changed it up some compared to the book. I’d like to see it one more time in theaters and this will definitely be one I want to own! It had just enough humor, magic, action and great great music. My favorite part is the beautiful costumes.

Lady Galadriel’s hair!!! Omg!! 😛 I am definitely going to cosplay her or Arwen soon.
She’s so magical. I wish I was an elf!!
The song the dwarves sing at Bilbo’s house gave me goosebumps, too.
Thorin was a truly emotional character.. I really enjoyed his performance throughout the whole movie.
This is “Song of The Lonely Mountain” performed by Neil Finn.
He’s an outstanding singer from New Zealand.
When this song played during the credits I couldn’t leave until it was finished.
There was no stinger after the credits, but I recommend staying for the music 🙂
And for a cool look at The Hobbit sets by Lego check out MTV Geek!
So today I’m going to listen to The Hobbit soundtrack on repeat, wear my elf crown around the house, and slay some orcs on EverQuest II ! 😀
Have you seen The Hobbit yet? If so, what did you think?? And don’t forget to read my review of The Hobbit menu from Denny’s!

  1. Did you see it in 2d or 3d? I haven't seen it yet because of all the talk about the headache inducing frame rate of the movie. Did you get any of that when you saw it?

    1. I saw it in 2D. I did notice it was hard to see clearly during the battle scenes. No headaches for me, though!

  2. Long post ahead… too much to say.

I saw The Hobbit (An Unexpected Journey) twice… and would love to see it again… very few theaters have it in IMAX 3D HFR, but there's one near you… thought about a trip but probably won't find time 🙁

I saw it in 2D the first time just to enjoy the movie for what it is. It's a bit slow in parts (especially in the beginning) and does suffer from story bloat, but once it gets moving, it's pretty exciting. I loved the The Lord of the Rings trilogy even though I had never read the books, and I was really excited by the extended editions of the movies. It's pretty easy for me to sit through 3 hours of any story Peter Jackson wants to tell about Middle Earth, so The Hobbit was pure enjoyment for me.

All 2D formats are normal frame rate (24 frames per second). The 3D format comes in 2 flavors, the normal frame rate or the high frame rate (HFR, 48 frames per second). One benefit of the HFR is to allow more images and more light to reach the eyes, helping to minimize the darkening of movies that occurs with current 3D technology. It's also supposed to allow action to appear smoother to our eyes. In the real world, there is no frame rate, and our eyes perceive much higher rates of motion than we're used to seeing (and even more than the HFR can provide).

One complaint regarding HFR is that it looks fake. Partly this is because our eyes are used to seeing motion appear less fluid on film. For reasons I don't fully understand, this also involves the props and sets appearing cheaper.

Interestingly, the computer-generated effects have generally been the least-bothersome to most people. This Kotaku article explains this really well: http://kotaku.com/5970900/avatar-2-could-look-even-more-like-a-video-game-than-the-hobbit-does-but-that-might-not-be-a-bad-thing

My experience seeing it in 3D HFR was good. Lady Frog did not enjoy it as much. The opening of the movie is primarily live-action, so the HFR stands out a bit more, and it does take some getting used to. I did enjoy that the movie appeared less dark than many 3D films do. The 3D was overall very well-done and primarily limited to giving depth to scenes rather than being gimmicky with things flying out of the screen at you. I enjoyed the 3D most in the broad, panoramic scenes of Rivendale and other parts of Middle Earth.

In general, I think 3D can often seem very natural but can sometimes be quite jarring. I felt the same way about the HFR. Put together, most of the movie was fine. Some parts were distracting because of the 3D, some because of the HFR, and some because of both.

If I watched The Hobbit again, I'm not sure what format I'd prefer. Although I'd like to see it in 3D again at some point (maybe at home and not in the theater), I still default to seeing movies in 2D, and The Hobbit is likely not going to be an exception to that rule. Especially when watching movies at home, wearing the 3D glasses is awkward when you're eating, getting up to go get a drink, or trying to see what the cat is chewing on.

Overall, I enjoyed The Hobbit. I think it did a good job of getting our heroes out to the start of their quest. As an introduction movie, it may not have had as much action or excitement in it. I think the 2nd movie will be very exciting (and possibly the 3rd depending on how they break up the story and what extra material they add in), but I've also heard a lot people fear that the 2nd movie is where most of the boring bloat will be added. Either way, I can't wait until the next 2 come out and may have to find time to see The Hobbit again before they do.

  3. And I'm not done yet…

Until recently, I never read The Lord of the Rings. I read The Hobbit at some point after seeing the The Lord of the Rings movies and was not very impressed.

I recently re-read The Hobbit in the months leading up to the film's release. I found it to be a more enjoyable read this time around. Although The Hobbit is a relatively light-hearted story with a fair bit of humor, its telling by J.R.R. Tolkien seemed somewhat dry to me.

After completing The Hobbit for the second time, I began reading The Lord of the Rings. It was fairly exhausting, and I can't say that I enjoyed it much. There is no denying Tolkien's accomplishment in creating this fully fleshed-out fantasy world complete with races, languages, and a rich history. The impact his works had on the fantasy genre including books, movies, and especially video games is unparalleled. However, I do not think he was a very gifted writer, and his books are cumbersome to read. There were some things that I felt his books approached better, but in general, I believe that Peter Jackson's telling of the story of The Lord of the Rings is greatly superior.

I encourage you to try reading The Hobbit, because it's always great to pick up a book! It's a pretty short book, so it's not too hard to get through. Maybe you'll love it.

Without getting into any spoilers, Peter Jackson took a few liberties with the story (as he did with LotR) in the interest of balancing out his telling of it. I'm not too crazy about Azog in the movie (why he appears to be blatantly CGI when all the main orcs in LotR looked great as men in costumes; why the orcs are now talking in another language with really glaring subtitles), but I recognize why Peter Jackson's included him. (Tolkien wrote about him but did not include him in the telling of The Hobbit.) Again, I'm very excited for the next 2 movies.

After completing The Lord of the Rings, I trudged through the 100+ pages of appendices at the end of Return of the King. Obviously, it was not meant to be enjoyed as narrative (I assume), and I was not expecting to consider it a great literary work. It did give a lot of interesting insight into the depth of Tolkien's world and some of the back story that gets left out along the way (some of which Peter Jackson is incorporating into The Hobbit to make it 3 movies).

I just recently began reading The Silmarillion. I've always heard that it's the least enjoyable of all of Tolkien's books, but so far I'm enjoying it the most. We'll see how I feel at its completion, however.

    Ser Frog out.

    1. Great information on the difference in 2D and 3D, Ser Frog!! I definitely learned a lot 😀 I have only ever seen ONE movie in 3D. It was "Brave" .. I enjoyed it and was surprised how the 3D effects merely "enhanced" the scenery. I still haven't been to anything in IMAX.

I think adding The Hobbit to my reading list will be a must. I have felt a bit lost ever since Harry Potter ended so I am constantly looking for new book ideas.

Perhaps we should start a book club! Especially ones that turn into movies. Would be great to catch a movie together someday. 🙂

I hope you enjoy reading The Hobbit. Let me know your thoughts on it!

OMGLITZY: Tutorial: Faux Corset

Tutorial: Faux Corset

If you’ve ever looked up high quality corsets then you’ll find that they are also high in price. I wanted to attend the local Renaissance festival as a fairy this year and pictured a corset to go with my outfit. I decided to use what I know best – craft foam! Sheets of craft foam are so cheap (like less than a $1!) so if I messed up then I wouldn’t feel too bad about it. This tutorial is quite simple, but you will need some basic sewing knowledge. The corset itself doesn’t actually squeeze your waist. It’s more like a belt to be honest. But I think it gives a nice Renaissance look without the uncomfortable feeling a real corset has.

The first thing I did was look up what style of corset I wanted to make. I decided to go with an “under bust” that had a pointed top and bottom. This gives the illusion that it’s a corset rather than if it were just straight across like a belt. I cut my shape out of a sheet of craft foam and used a hole puncher on one edge of each piece. This is where you’ll eventually lace it up. Make sure your holes are big enough for whatever type of string or ribbon you’ll be using. For my decoration I drew swirls with a sharpie first to see a pattern. Then I went over my swirls with hot glue for a 3D effect.

After you’re done with all the hot glue decoration, paint your foam with Gesso. This acts as a primer for your paint. I didn’t put any Gesso on the back of mine, but I would recommend it because it also strengthens the foam.

Once your Gesso is dry, paint your corset any color you’d like. I was going for a “woodland fairy” look so I decided to make my corset resemble leather. I painted the whole thing brown first, then used a sponge to add the gold and little bits of metallic green highlights.
You’re probably wondering how you’re going to actually *wear* this faux corset! For this I held up my two foam pieces to my stomach and marked where the back edge was on my sides. Then I measured the back of my waist from side to side. Then I was able to cut my fabric and hem the edges.

Since I might want to change out the color of this fabric some day, I decided to glue velcro to the fabric and corset edge. This is also handy because it makes it easier to take your faux corset on and off since you won’t have to undo the lacing.
The lacing is a brown cord I had in my craft drawers, but I think a colorful ribbon would look pretty, too.
And that’s how you make a faux corset! I don’t think anyone would know it’s made from craft foam do you? So very comfortable and versatile!
Coming soon is a tutorial for my flower crown and fairy wings. I made both from easy craft supplies, too!
Update: Here is the Fairy Wing Tutorial! 🙂
