OMGLITZY: Review: Gothic Lolita Wigs

Review: Gothic Lolita Wigs

The latest wig I added to my collection is the Classic Wavy in Deep Pink by Gothic Lolita Wigs. Most of my wigs are from Arda, but I loved the length and light curl this wig offered. I have never ordered from GLW so let me tell you a little about it!
This is how it came shipped. It came in TWO days!! I was so impressed with how fast their shipping was. It also came with a wig cap, which I think is great!! I lose mine all the time!

I gently took it out of the package to show you how they had stored it. It wasn’t tangled or flattened at all.

This was after I ran my fingers through it to loosen the curls.

The inside of the wig has adjustable straps and 3 attached combs to help it stay secure while you wear it. Arda has the straps but not these combs. I loved this addition! Someone asked if these would fit larger heads, and I think it definitely will. Arda’s might be a little bigger, but I didn’t think this GLW wig was too snug at all.

This is me wearing it in my bathroom lighting. The pink is gorgeous!! Though it is called “deep pink” it is definitely more pastel in color.

I teased the bangs just slightly so they would stay to the side better. The hair strands stayed smooth and don’t have a fake shiny look to them.

After combing it with my wig brush the curls had a lot of bounce to them, too! I love the length and fullness of this wig.
Here is a picture of it in the sunlight!
So overall I give Gothic Lolita Wigs an A+! The price is just right for this quality and how fast it shipped. I will definitely be ordering more from them!
Do you have a favorite wig company?

  1. Arda is my go-to when it comes to wigs [cos I feared my head would have been too fat for overseas' wigs..LOL] but I have used eBay a couple times and have been happy with the products from sellers there. 🙂

  2. It looks so pretty!! I like how it doesn't have that ultra shiny look to it.. you could fool people! lol I need that wig in all of the colors! XD

  3. I usually order my wigs from ebay shops. The price is low and the quality okay (for the price). Sometimes I'm frustrated, sometimes very happy.
I've known GLW before but have never ordered one. The shipping costs to germany are not that low and there are also the taxes… -.- I hate it!!! Our betterment tax here is 19% so… I'd have to pay 19% additional to the TOTAL price.. (wig+shipping). This sucks so much. So… I guess I will still order my future wigs from ebay shops in GB.. :

Anyway! A nice wig and I love the bangs! (:

  4. I love that it comes with the combs already installed! That's a nice little perk! It looks really nice on you too! I normally use Arda or Epic!

  5. You look adorable with that wig 🙂

  6. That wig is gorgeous, thank you so much for the review.

  7. Oh wow, I have been looking for a wig just like that for ages, that one looks just gorgeous. I wonder what the shipping time would be to Australia. I am always so worried about buying things like wigs and shoes online, because you can never tell if they are going to be a good fit/colour/quality until you have them. Shipping is so expensive from the US (or anywhere) to Aus, and there is nothing more disappointing than spending a fortune on something that turns out to be terrible quality. So thank you for the review 🙂 I might have to get me one of their wigs.

  8. LOVE the wig. The colour and style suits you perfectly. I have never heard a bad thing about gothic lolita wigs. I def will be buying from them soon.

  9. It's gorgeous! I've been eyeing GLW for a while now, so it's awesome seeing a review about it!

  10. Looks really sweet! But i prefer short wigs. I want a short pink wig!! T u T

OMGLITZY: SOE Live 2013

SOE Live 2013

Last week I was lucky enough to attend SOE Live for the first time! I had won a ticket to the convention for the video I entered in this contest. So I started saving up some money for a flight out to Las Vegas! This event was a big deal for me because I love to play EverQuest 2. I have played it for 6 years and met so many friends online. For the last couple years I have been raiding with a guild called Brimstone. This group of people have become a second family to me. We raid 3 nights a week, and I hardly ever miss raid night. So I spend a lot of time with these great people, and it was a real treat to get to meet them in person! We all clicked right away and had so much to talk about. In all there were about 12 of us from our group there. We made new friends, too, and I even sat next to a Planetside 2 player on the plane!

One of the coolest things that happened was getting interviewed by Destructoid! We were waiting in line to get our badges when two of my guild members and I got picked to be filmed for the video. You can see us at 0:26 and 0:43!
http://youtu.be/tgo3Em1J2Aw

Since I could probably talk about my trip forever .. I decided to make a Top Ten List of my favorite moments at SOE Live. These are in no particular order.. because each one was so much fun!

1. Meeting My Guild Members

I am so thankful I had the chance to meet everyone. You guys truly are incredibly awesome, and I miss y’all so much. I can’t wait until next SOE Live when we can all hang out again 🙂  I have to give a shout to Cylaa (Diane) for being my necro sister! We both play the same class in EQ2 and we ended up having so much in common. We shared a pizza and talked about our cats! How perfect!! 🙂 Also, shout out to Banguk (Kyle) for driving me around Las Vegas. It was SO much fun exploring the strip with you and thank you for putting up with all the times I asked you to take my picture lol ….  And to Astijia (Greg) and Herminee (Jackie) for taking such good care of me.. so grateful to have you pick me up/drop me off at the airport and provide us all with the Taj Mahal to crash at 🙂

2. The Reveal of EverQuest Next
This was really cool to witness.. I got goosebumps a few times watching the keynote and attending the panels. There’s some major upgrades and unique changes coming to this game. My guild leader (Astijia) typed up a summary that I think covered a lot of it:
Keypoints: Destructible environment, multiclassing, parkour style toon running, VERY improved world graphics 🙂 planetside 2 engine, and – mobs no longer have static spawns…. The pop in the world, and wander until they find conditions they like. (the orc camps don’t just pop every 15 minutes, if they are harassed, they pack up and move to a new spot…. Piss off the orcs too many times and the king sends an invasion force.
Downsides: Need a mainframe to run it – but that remains to be seen, toons are very cartoony – very wowlike. The devs said they were trying to appeal to a broader audience, we will see how that goes. We all got beta invites, so scouting will be done.
The world is topside, with 2 subterranean levels; you can literally stop where you are and dig down to see what you may find….”
3. Seeing the “Pawn Stars” Shop

Something super fun I got to see was the store where they film the TV show “Pawn Stars“.. Since Banguk had rented a car (a black mustang!!) he invited me to ride with him so I could see the shop. We were in a hurry to get to the convention for the EQ Next announcement so I didn’t have time to go inside (there was a line out the door) .. But I did hear that the dad was in there taking pics with people. Maybe next year I can go in!

4. Playing in the EQ2 Tournament

My guild members have entered the tournament at SOE Live before, but this was my first time competing. We knew it was going to be a pre-set character group and you had to finish the zone as fast as you could. The group that finished the quickest would win $6,000! Well we thought we kicked butt… Finishing The Dreadcutter in just 19 minutes and 40 something seconds … but sadly other groups beat our time. We even had a computer glitch – Cylaa’s video card crashed and her computer went black for a good 3 minutes. But even though we didn’t win, we were all hyped up after playing together. It was an adrenaline rush, and I couldn’t have been with a better group of players 🙂

5. Eating at the Bacchanel Buffet

One thing we all looked forward to from the moment we got to Las Vegas was eating at the Bacchanel Buffet at Caesar’s Palace! We arrived at the buffet at a perfect time because there wasn’t a line. So we got our table and immediately headed for the food 🙂 I enjoyed the sushi, mini hamburgers, and mac & cheese! But the best part was the dessert bar. It was HUGE! I wanted to take one of everything (and I almost did.) It was totally worth the $50 it cost to get in!

6. Attending the SOE Pool Party

Last year’s pool party left quite an impression on everyone that attended SOE Live. So this year I was excited to see the craziness for myself. Sadly, the lines to get drinks were really long.. And not too many people were in the pools. But I still hopped in and played some volleyball with a few people. It was a cool feeling to look around and see the beautiful Las Vegas hotels in the background.. I felt like I was in a movie!

7. Seeing a Bride and Groom

This may seem silly to some of you, but to me I thought it was so romantic! I think it would be really fun to get married in Las Vegas, so I was hoping I would spot a few brides. Well not only did I see one, but she sat right next to me! Yep, after me and Banguk ordered our gelato at The Venetian we sat on a bench to watch a statue performance. Well next thing I know this BEAUITFUL bride sits right next to me! I told her how lovely she looked and was just giddy to see a fairy tale right before my eyes. After we left The Venetian we saw her and the groom on one of the gondolas outside!

8. Playing Slot Machines

Even though I didn’t spend much money on the slot machines, I knew I needed to at least give it a try! I put two dollars in the Wizard of Oz machine and me and Herminee both won about $10! But we decided to just play it out until we lost.. So at the end of my trip I only lost $7 gambling which I think is pretty good 🙂 I can definitely see how people get hooked on it though.. I really wanted to keep adding more dollars in! lol

9. The Costume Contest

As you know, I love to cosplay, but since a lot of my costumes aren’t plane friendly I decided not to bring one to SOE Live. But two of my guild members did, and Cylaa got Best in Show! Gothicangel also was also in the Top 10 with her costume. They both looked awesome! I hope next year I can make something to bring.

10. Riding in a Limo on the Strip

On our final trip back to the house, Astijia got a limo for all of us to ride in! This was the first time most of us have ever been in one! I got super excited when it turned onto the strip.. it was nighttime so all the lights outside were going and it was a Saturday night! I felt super special – I mean we were in a limo on the strip in Las Vegas!!! It was an epic way to end our adventure.

:+:+:+:+:+:+:

Other fun things that happened that I have to include is getting a Nagafen Hat from the SOE team (I’ve been wearing it around the house all the time!), seeing Elvis impersonators (one was even singing!), spotting a crowd at the Forum Shoppes and finding out Mike Tyson was inside the store, running into Ron Haras (winner of one of my Yoshi Eggs!), getting my picture with The Rock (ok ok it was just a wax figure), and all the awesome SOE/EQ2 swag I bought!

Now I am counting down the days until next year’s SOE Live! This was the most fun I have ever had.. I live and breathe EverQuest 2 so being surrounded by friends that share the same interest was so much fun. I will never forget all the great times we had, and I am certainly looking forward to next year 🙂
:+:+:+:+:

And my guild member (Adaac) took amazing pictures and posted them on his Flickr. So please check them out, too!

  1. Looks like you had an amazing trip. Lots of fun new people and experiences. How cool was that limo?

  2. So jealous, that looks like so much fun!!! We're saving up all our money for Fan Days right now since John Barrowman will be in attendance, along with some other amazing guests!! I've gotta start thinking up of a new costume idea. I hope to see you out there again too!

    ReplyDelete

  3. Dang! That trip sounds like fun! Vegas is awesome, and it sounds like you did a lot of really great things while you were there… in addition to going to SoE Live and meeting your guild! It's a shame you didn't win the contest… after seeing your tweet about it, I thought for sure you guys would've nailed it. Thanks for sharing about your trip.

EQ Next sounds like it will have some interesting gameplay mechanics. I'll be keeping an eye on it to see how it comes out. Pretty cool that you'll be in the beta, but it's a shame you won't be able to tell us about it (assuming they have the usual NDA at first).

  4. I loved reading about your trip, it seemed like a really awesome time. My husband and I were thinking about going, but San Diego Comic Con just wiped us financially to make the trip. Maybe next year though 🙂

One thing I did find funny was one of the downsides to EQ Next that your guildie listed was that the toons look too cartoonish and WoW-like. I am a huge World of Warcraft player, and to me, the graphics of Everquest (I play EQ2) look super cheesy. But at the end of the day both games are still fun and its just a matter of perspective.

  5. Looks like you had too much fun out there. Good to see you had such a blast out there. Remind me to give you a high five next time I see you.

  6. Looks like you had a great time!! I love traveling to new places for geeky events 🙂

OMGLITZY: The Nutcracker Ice Show

The Nutcracker Ice Show

Every year at the Gaylord Texan Resort, there is an epic Ice Show put on for the holidays. This year the theme was The Nutcracker! My parents surprised me with tickets to the show for my birthday, and we all really enjoyed going.

The Gaylord Texan is a beautiful resort with all kinds of other attractions inside. There was a gingerbread house, giant Christmas tree, and you could even visit Santa!

When you enter the Ice Show, they give you a HUGE jacket to wear. I didn’t think I would need it on top of my big coat, but I am so glad I wore it. The temperature inside was only 9 DEGREEs! It was so cold I couldn’t feel my face.
They use two million pounds of ice to make all the sculptures. I was amazed at the size and detail of each piece. You can read more about how they make the ice here.

Of course, my favorite sculpture was the pink pegasus!

There was also an ice slide you could go down! That’s me on the slide!!

The last room in the show was dedicated to New York City. There was a Yellow Taxi, the Statue of Liberty and Big Apples.

If you live in the DFW area, I definitely recommend checking out the Ice Show at the Gaylord. The whole place was beautiful and really put me in the holiday spirit. There are also several restaurants inside, and it’s the official hotel for the Dallas Cowboys!
:+:+:+:+:
Hope everyone has a happy holiday!!
Do you have any holiday attractions in your town?

  1. How it looks so festive but ever so cold. I wish they did something like that in Australia.

  2. Such beautiful sculptures but I have to say that the pegasus is my favorite, too!

  3. That looks so cool (in more ways than one) ! Merry Christmas!

    ReplyDelete

  4. Whoa. Totally not what I was expecting when I heard "Ice Show" as a skating nerd. I can't get over the level of detail in the sculptures. Beautiful.

OMGLITZY: Tutorial: League of Legends Annie Cosplay

Tutorial: League of Legends Annie Cosplay

Since PAX East is in a few weeks it got me thinking about my trip to PAX Prime last year! Then I realized I hadn’t posted a tutorial for my Annie cosplay from League of Legends. I won’t be able to go to PAX East this year, but here’s the tutorial in case someone wants to dress up as Annie!

This was the version of Annie I was going for.
I got my dress from American Apparel. I altered it some to fit better and added the fringe to the bottom of the sleeves. I would love to add the swirl design to my dress since I didn’t have time to before. The petticoat and leg warmers are from Amazon. The wig I used was a Jareth in Raspberry from Arda. I did cut it quite a bit to get Annie’s bangs and style. I already owned black shoes and a white collared shirt, but I am sure you can find that easily at Walmart or on Amazon!
For the fireball prop, I took a styrofoam ball and hot glued fake fur to it. I found all these supplies at my local craft store.

I really just randomly snipped at the fur and glued it in place until the whole ball was covered.

Then I used hairspray to give the fur a spiky look.
During this step I recommend that you wear gloves! Because the Sharpies stained my hands pretty bad. Basically, I started with the red and hand colored the root of the fur. Then I worked my way up with the orange and finally added yellow to the tips.

For Annie’s headband you will need a headband (any color), light and dark pink felt, cotton balls, hot glue, and scissors. I made a pattern for the ears out of paper, too.

Cover your headband in the light colored pink felt using the hot glue.

After you cut out your shape for the ears (or horns.. they kinda look like either) stuff a cotton ball inside it to give it volume.

Tada! No sewing required! I want to make all different colored cat ears now 😀

Annie’s backpack was sad to make. I found a kid’s pink fluffy backpack on Amazon and bought two of these bears. (The backpack I bought is no longer listed, but this one is very similar.)

Here’s the sad part… I’m so sorry little bears!!  *cry*

So all I did was stitch up the back of the little bears heads and then hand stitched them onto the straps of the backpack. The Tibbers that I carried around was found at Toys R Us. He was thankful he didn’t get beheaded.

“You smell like burning!”
:+:+:+:
Let me know if you make an Annie cosplay!
Do you play League of Legends?
If so who is your favorite champion?

  1. I'm not trying to hate, this tutorial was actually helpful, but you do know that is not what Annie actually looks like right? It's sorta similar but not correct.

    1. You may not have been "trying" but your comment did come off as rude and unnecessary 🙁 Cosplay is supposed to be a freedom of expression. It's an art. I posted a reference photo of the version of Annie I was going for, but even if I didn't judging a cosplay because it's not "exactly perfect" is why so many people are afraid to try it. Cosplay can be so many things! I want people to feel encouraged to embrace their favorite characters whether it is an exact replica, fan interpretation or an original design. It's about having FUN and enjoying yourself.

Your comment sends a wrong message to the cosplay community. I hope you think to remember a real person is behind the computer the next time you try to tell someone their art is not correct.

    2. Your costume looks awesome, just like everything else you do.

  2. Yep, pretty sure she knows Annie in reply to other post. Uh, reference photo >-<. Hey Glitzy I met you at Pax and got some great pics. You always put fun spins on your coz costumes. Looks like a good con coming up. Need to head that way.

Happy Things #13

Hap·pi·ness – state of well-being characterized by emotions ranging from contentment to intense joy
Here are the latest things that made me happy 🙂
I found Etsy seller Silver Owl Creations on Pinterest and really fell in love with her designs! I was looking for a necklace to wear with my Renaissance costume and this one was so beautiful I just had to order it!

For Valentine’s Day, my Mom gave me this LoTR Lego set. I had a lot of fun putting it together with her. And I was glad I had the help because these things aren’t easy! Lots of pieces and this was a small set!!

I was at Barnes and Noble the other day looking for Easter cards when I spotted a whole section of LoTR cards! I wanted to buy the Legolas, Arwen, and Aragorn for myself but I resisted ..hehe
I got this dress at Target the other day for $25. I went back and bought it in other colors, too, because it fit so well! I can’t wait until it’s warmer so I can wear more sundresses.

A silly thing about me is that I love finding rainbows. This one was reflected off a mosaic candle holder on my shelf. I just squealed when I spotted it!

Photographer Eli Luna sent me another Ramona Flowers shot from our photoshoot. I really like this one! Can’t wait to go through the whole set soon.

I found this amazing shot while clicking around on Flickr for Arwen cosplays. This was taken by Lynn (DigiNik13) when I was at Sci Fi Expo. She has some great pictures on her Flickr so definitely check her out!

And a Happy Things post wouldn’t be complete without a picture of Pixie. Here I was getting ready to work on my Fiona costume when Pixie decided the fabric made a better bed for her.
Pixie had another visit to the vet for her check up and the news is good! Her foot healed up nicely and as long as she doesn’t chew another hole in it she should be fine. She started sitting in my laundry hamper recently, but I needed to take it back to my salon so I replaced it with this box.. She doesn’t seem to mind! Happy kitty 🙂

What has made you happy lately?

All-Con 2013

All-Con is a convention that covers many different genres of nerd culture. It’s located in Addison, Tx and started in 2005! This was my first time to go to All-Con. I was impressed with the diverse feel.. Although there was a lot of Star Wars and Steam Punk themes going on. Both of which I am happy with! 🙂 I am more of a fantasy/comic girl and this convention had plenty of that. On a different spectrum – it had quite a bit of anime/manga, too. It reminded me of my visits to AKon and Anime Fest with panels and fandoms found in different rooms of the hotel. I only went Friday and Saturday evening so I am sure I missed a lot. Friday I was dressed as Ramona Flowers and Saturday I was in street clothes so I could enjoy watching my friends in the costume contest!
To see all of my pictures from All-Con check out my Flickr album
This is one of my best friends Payton dressed as Queen Amidala. I enjoy seeing her and her dad at all the conventions and hanging out with them!

These are my other best friends Courtney (above) and Scotty (below). She was a Magnaguard and Scotty was General Grievous.

My three friends got picked for second and third in the costume contest! 1st place went to a giant wookie (not pictured because he didn’t fit on stage lol).. But Courtney and Scotty were still given a cash prize because they were one vote away from a tie with the wookie. Grats to all of you!

I saw so many friends at All-Con! This was Kevin as Link and his girlfriend Courtney

I was also so impressed with this Mega Man! He won first place in his category.

Here is CookieCup Cakes as Princess Peach. Isn’t she the cutest?  These pics were taken Friday when I dressed as Ramona.

Had to get a pic with Payton as Dark Zelda. So cool!

This was an awesome Steam Punk/Comic cross over group. Me and Harley compared our hammers, lol. (I think hers would win)

My good friend Erica was there with many other awesome Star Trek cosplayers.
This is my blogging buddy James from A Galaxy Called Dallas. I look for him at every convention and we finally found each other at All-Con!

Here’s a peek at my “street clothes” outfit for Saturday.
I wore a Bazinga! shirt is from Kohl’s – you can get it here and receive 10% off with the code BLOGS10 until May 10, 2013 🙂
My blue jeans are from Express, Zelda earrings from Ragin’ Gauges, and my Ramona Flowers purse from Amazon.
Photo by Jack Teague (who is another great friend and awesome photographer!)
:+:+:+:+:+:+:+:+:+:
I had a wonderful time at All-Con! I am looking forward to next year already. Tickets for registration are available on their website.
What is your favorite genre to see at conventions?
Do you go to meet celebs, buy stuff, hear panels, or see cosplay?
Or all of the above like me? 😀

Ramona Flowers Hammer Tutorial

My very first cosplay was Ramona Flowers at Dallas Comic Con in 2012. She's one of my favorite characters and holds a special place in my cosplay heart! I recently went to All-Con (blog post for that coming soon) and wanted to wear something comfy. Ramona is so fun because I already owned most of these clothes and dress similarly! I did have to buy a wig this time (last time my real hair was blue, and another time pink). I also decided to spice this up a bit by adding the hammer! I had a photo shoot with Eli Luna that same weekend and thought the hammer would be a great prop! So after the cut is a tutorial for how I made a last minute Ramona Flowers hammer. Enjoy!
Oh! And I posted this picture (taken by my mom and edited by me) on Twitter and got a retweet from the creator of Scott Pilgrim, Bryan Lee O'Malley! I about fell out of my chair when I saw this.. I was so excited!!! That's straight up cosplay approval right there. omg!

Here's a shot that Eli Luna took at the photo shoot. He did an amazing job editing this, too! Check out his photography at http://www.eliluna.com
On to the Hammer Tutorial! >>>>>

Pixie Visits the Vet

If you've been following my Facebook and Instagram then you know that Pixie recently had to visit the vet. I wanted to share her story with any readers that might not know all the details.
Let me backtrack a little here: Pixie was already declawed on all four paws before I adopted her 3 years ago. However, when I first got her, I noticed a single claw on her back foot. So I took her to the vet and she told me that it looked like one of her claws had grown back. It looked healthy and as long as Pixie didn't show any signs of pain then it was probably fine to leave alone. Well a couple of weeks ago Pixie had some dried blood on her front paw, and I was worried something was wrong. Pixie was due for an annual check up and a respiratory shot so I figured it was good to bring her in anyway. After the check up the vet found a big hole in Pixie's paw where a claw was growing in. Pixie had been chewing on it so the vet cleaned it really good, gave her an antibiotic shot and a cone to wear so she won't be able to lick it. The vet also suggested Pixie get a dental cleaning because she had really red gums and signs of some bad teeth. So I scheduled another appointment and took my poor cone-head kitty home.

Warning: Possibly squeamish photo after the break.

February Outings

This year one of my New Year’s resolutions was to see more of Dallas. My goal was to do at least one event a month. Well I was off to a bad start because I didn’t do anything in January lol … But February I more than made up for it!
For Valentine’s Day I went to eat at the Olive Garden. It’s one of my favorites! I always order spaghetti and pig out on breadsticks.
That night I went to see the movie Beautiful Creatures. I read the book and was really excited for the movie. It was a bit of a letdown, though. The storyline was changed quite a bit, and I felt very confused. I didn’t enjoy it 🙁

My next outing was to the Dallas Museum of Art. I was invited to “Late Night at the Museum” … Every third Friday the museum is open until midnight. It’s free admission and you can watch performances and see panels in different rooms. My favorite was the Steampunk room.
I was also amazed to see “Water Lilies” by Claude Monet. We had a print of this in my home growing up so I recognized it right away. I just can’t believe I saw the real thing!

Next up is going to the Wyly Theater for a play. This was my outfit for my night.
I got to watch the play King Lear by Shakespeare. It was unique because they modernized it. Think of the new Romeo + Juliet movie with Leo. Still said the play word by word but used guns and wore suits. Very cool!
Next was my night at the House of Blues. This is what I wore to see Lindsey Stirling perform. She is a beautiful violinist. She was on America’s Got Talent and made it to the top 5. Her music is beautiful.

After purchasing her album on iTunes, I find myself replaying Song of the Caged Bird the most. I also love Crystallize, Elements, and of course her cover of Zelda songs.

I also want to add this photo to show a wonderful client I had in February. She donated over 10 inches of her hair. Isn’t that great?? I thought her style came out lovely! You can follow more photos of my clients on my salon’s Facebook page.
:+:+:+:+:+:
So far I think I’ve done a good job with my New Year’s resolution! Last weekend I went to AllCon, and this weekend is the MLG Winter Championships. But I still want to do more “Dallas-like” things. When the weather warms up I want to go to Six Flags!
What special events have you been to this year so far?
Anything planned for the spring?

My Next Cosplay is…

Fiona! I am doing the version from Shrek Forever After. This appealed to me because I think it will stand out in the crowd! I love characters that require some unique makeup. (I had a blast being Asajj Ventress.) So the bright green skin will surely get noticed! I also wanted to do a completely handmade costume. This is a great way for me to learn how to make armor and a weapon.

This outfit including the armor (but not the sword)
I will be attempting to make this battle axe!

Princess of the Nerds: My Room, Art, and EQ2 Loot

A few weekends ago I had a lot of energy and decided to finish decorating my computer area. I had a few things up but knew there were a lot of posters still under my bed. I also have been meaning to showcase my new monitor that I got for my laptop. I play EverQuest 2 on a Sony Vaio F Series and purchased a Samsung 23″LED monitor along with a Logitech keyboard. I originally bought a nice Razer gaming keyboard but the keys were so loud so I went with a simple Logitech for now. I also use a Razer Kraken headset (seen in my previous post) to go with my Razer Naga mouse. My other computer is a 21″ Mac desktop and my iPhone and iPad can be seen in the middle.
Do you think I leveled up my computer nerd status?
If you follow my Facebook page then you saw this pic of my Warm Bodies t shirt. I got this in the freebie room at Sci Fi Expo and forgot to include it in that post!

This is the photo I sent in for the King of the Nerds casting call! I included a pretty cool (I think I sounded cool) bio and a link to my blog. The show is very entertaining, and I think it looks fun! One big thing on my bucket list (I should post that someday) is to be on a reality show. Amazing Race would be my first choice, but I think I’d have a pretty good shot at the $100,000 prize on King of the Nerds! I hope I get picked for the second season!
These photos have gone a bit viral lately, and I just had to give it a try. The app is imadeface and it lets you pick from a variety of facial features to mimic your own. I’m not sure mine looks like me, but I’ve seen some that look just like the person! Pretty fun and it’s free.

For Christmas I received some amazing new art supplies. I would love to get better at drawing and painting so I picked up some ‘manga for beginners’ books. This is literally my first try at it so I realize there’s a lot of room for improvement. But it was the first page of the book so it was a good place to start. I hope to post more of my progress as an artist soon.

This was a gnarly robe upgrade for my necromancer on EQ2 the other day. About 5 or 6 of us from my guild (Carpe Diem) raid with a group called Brimstone Alliance three nights a week. Lately I haven’t won too many new items so I was pretty excited when I won this new robe. It dropped off Drinal in Harrow’s End after doing two soulwells! I’d like to add that we killed him flawlessly! That means no one in our raid died the whole fight! Woot!

And here’s a picture of my character Audeley. You get to wear appearance gear in this game so you can keep your stats from your fighting gear but change up how it looks. I change my outfits a lot.. I’m a glitzy geek remember? Usually I’m some shade of pink or purple, but for now I am green and cloverly to celebrate Brew Day (or St. Patrick’s Day.)
:+:+:+:
I’ve done some other cool stuff lately that I am excited to put into another blog post so come back soon for that update. This was a pretty geeky post that I’m super proud of! I love my room and computer area and of course you know I love to play EverQuest 2. It will be cool to see if I hear back from King of the Nerds when they start casting. And maybe when I get better at drawing I can create my own manga. I feel like a “Princess of the Nerds” now!
What kind of computer do you use?
Which reality show would you want to be on?
Is there any talent or hobby you’d like to get better at?

Cosplay: Choosing a Character

One of the most frequent questions I am asked is “How do you pick what to cosplay?” If you’ve never worn a costume before you may have asked this question yourself. It’s a great first step to becoming a cosplayer! A lot of people will answer “Just wear whatever you want!” I definitely agree with this, but with thousands of characters to choose from you still have to narrow it down somehow.

Reasons for choosing a character will vary for everyone. It’s actually quite a personal commitment to undertake, but nonetheless I wanted to give some insight to my OWN procedure for choosing a cosplay! This method may not work for all, but I hope it gives some ideas for deciding what criteria will be important to you.

Princess Zelda and Thor photos by Alan Tijerina
Choose a Genre
Pick something you love. It’s that simple! If you love video games then I am sure you have a special character you enjoy playing. Or maybe you’ve admired a certain superhero from Marvel or DC Comics. Some people even dress up as their favorite TV hero or heroine. I saw a Scully from X-Files cosplay once and totally fangirled! Cosplay isn’t limited to one genre over another. You can go with classic 80’s movies, childhood cartoons, or even an original character from a manga you might be developing. There’s a lot of creative freedom with cosplay, and the first step in choosing a character is deciding what you are passionate about. For myself, I love fantasy genres. So I’m really drawn towards characters with a medieval or magical feel to them. Once you find a genre you like the characters will speak to you, and you will enjoy your cosplay more.

Overall Look
This is the most important decision for me when I choose a character. I personally look for long sleeves, really cool hair or makeup, an interesting prop, and materials I’ll be comfortable in. These details help me decide if I’m going to enjoy wearing the costume or not. I prefer to cover my tattoos so that the focus is on the cosplay, and I love to wear long wigs. The props and materials are important to consider because convention hours can be long. A heavy sword, large wings or intricate armor may not be fun to wear after the 5th hour mark. I’ve also learned I am not a fan of wearing tight fitting bodysuits. So I am more likely to choose a character wearing a dress or skirt. These are just some things *I* look for in an overall look. So think about what makes *you* confident and the happiest in to have the best time in your costume.
My first comic con and cosplay!
Skill Level
No matter what your skill level is you CAN cosplay. You don’t even have to make it all yourself. A lot of people commission costumes. If you just want to have fun walking around a convention then do not worry about what others will think of your craftsmanship. However, if you plan to enter a competition there might be some rules to follow so be sure to read those beforehand. When cosplaying for the first time, I recommend wearing something simple. Don’t bite off more than you can chew. Try doing a “closet cosplay” where you find items you already own that you can turn into a character. I did a closet cosplay of Ramona Flowers for my first con. It helped me get my feet wet and motivated me to put on something more detailed for the next event. Start talking to other cosplayers for advice and google tutorials (or check out mine here!) for sewing and armor making tips. Then you’ll be ready to pick a character with a more difficult design for the next time.
Sewing my Fiona from Shrek costume after long hours of making the props.
Budget and Time
Some costumes are going to take a lot of work. When you look at a character’s armor, body paint, or prop be sure to make a list of all the materials you think you’ll need. Trips to the hobby or hardware store can become expensive. Plan out how much money you want to spend on a costume. If the character seems like it may be out of your budget then you may want to choose a different design. A lot of characters have more than one outfit, too. So if you don’t have the supplies to make an entire Batman suit from The Dark Knight maybe you can make Adam West’s version instead! Also, be sure to look at your calendar. When are you planing to wear this? Is one week enough time to sew all of Cinderella’s dress? Will my wig arrive by then? Do all your research as soon as possible to make sure you’ll have all your pieces ready before you plan to wear it.

Convention Specifics

If you will be attending an anime convention then you might want to wear an anime cosplay. Or a comic book character to a comic convention. Now remember: This isn’t a rule at all! I actually see a wide variety of cosplays at every convention I’ve been to. But one thing you might want to consider is the type of guests that might be at the con you are going to. When I met Billy Boyd (Pippin) from The Lord of The Rings I chose to wear an Arwen cosplay. Or when I met Tom Felton I wore Luna Lovegood. By choosing a character specific to the convention theme and guests, you’re more likely to run into other characters from that genre, too. This makes taking group photos especially fun! I also recommend looking at the weather. If you’re going to a convention in the summer, then you may want to choose a character that isn’t in full armor or heavy body makeup. If it’s in the winter you might not be warm enough in that Slave Leia costume.

Lord of The Rings cosplayers I met while at Sci Fi Expo 2013
The most important thing to remember when choosing a character to cosplay is you can be anything you want! Gender, height, weight, race and age – none of that should matter when you cosplay. Your options are limitless. Pick a character you love and have fun!
:+:+:+:+:
So these were just a few of the things I personally consider when I choose a character.
What specifics do you look for?
If you haven’t cosplayed before, but want to, which character would you like to make?

Tutorial: Fairy Wings

This year for the Scarborough Renaissance Festival I decided to dress up as a woodland fairy. I had never made fairy wings before, but this YouTube tutorial by Emily Autumn was SO helpful! I basically followed every step so I recommend watching it. In my tutorial I have posted photos of my progress and added a few tips so you can become a fairy, too!

Cosplay Etiquette: Cosplaying the Same Character

Today on the blog I am curious what some of y’all may think of a topic regarding cosplay! So I want to ask a question and have it open to polite discussion 🙂
What is the proper etiquette for cosplaying the same character as someone you know?
Here’s my backstory for where this is coming from: I have a list of characters in my head that I would love to cosplay someday. The list has grown fast and changes quite a bit. However, there are a few characters that have stayed on the list for quite awhile and simply haven’t found their time to be made yet.
So the other day a really talented cosplayer posted a character they want to cosplay. Well it turns out to be one that I want to do as well! This got me thinking – what is the proper etiquette for cosplaying the same character as someone else?
My first reaction was “Well now I can’t do it.” I’m still a newbie at this.. and the other cosplayer is an amazing veteran with super crafting skills. These are some of the thoughts that went through my head:
– I don’t want to look like I’m copying.
– I don’t want people to compare mine to theirs.
– I will compare mine to theirs even if I don’t mean to.
But the more I thought about it the more I realized most of those reasons were insecurities on my end. First of all, no one owns a character. In the end we are all copying. That’s exactly what cosplay is! You pick a character from a video game, anime, comic, etc and straight up “copy” the design. Part of the fun of cosplaying is recreating the look.
As far as etiquette goes I think it’s best to talk with the other cosplayer if you know them personally. Let them know you want to do a character that they’ve decided to do as well. Then ask them how they feel about it. This way you won’t jeopardize your friendship. Now if you don’t know the other cosplayer at all then I wouldn’t worry about trying to reach out to ask them to see if it’s okay. If you google the character you want to do you may find that 20+ other people have done that same character. It would be near impossible to track them all down to ask permission. So just go for it and create your cosplay in your own artistic way!
Now, there’s no stopping people from comparing or passing judgement. The cosplay community is pretty nice and welcoming, but there’s definitely plenty of trolls that sneak their way in. My best advice for this is to just ignore it. Even if you are the ONLY person to cosplay a character people are going to compare you to the original design. Try not to read the negative comments and if you accidentally do then just be a duck and let it roll right off your back. Because you’re fabulous no matter what they think.
You CAN control whether or not YOU pass judgement. If you are wearing the same cosplay as someone else then do your best not to nitpick the details. It goes two ways: don’t think that they are better than you just because they used different techniques or materials, but also don’t think that you are better than them either. Remember that we’re all just celebrating our love for a fandom.
When I am at a convention and I see someone dressed up as the same character as me, I actually get really excited! You know why? Because that means we both have a common interest. We love that character! It’s a great way to make a new friend.
So my final tip for cosplaying the same character as someone you know is: Don’t copy the cosplayer; cosplay the character! Always put your own creative twist on it. Make it your own! You’ll be more proud of your work that way.

So let me know what you think in the comments!

Harry Potter Appreciation

With the news of Diagon Alley opening at Universal Studios on July 8th, I had the urge to go through my photos for all things Harry Potter. I am a huge Potterhead and have been ever since the first book was released in the US in 1998. Let's talk about that story first! (Lots of photos ahead)

Dallas Comic Con 2014

My favorite convention of the year is the Dallas Comic Con. It's one of the largest in Texas, and I always look forward to seeing my friends here. The convention was held at a larger venue for the first time, too. This had its pros and cons. It was nice not having to wait in line outside in the heat. It also meant the lines inside were managed better since it was mostly all on one floor. At the old convention center, people were getting stuck on the *single* escalator and missing panels because they couldn't get upstairs!

Pixie the Lazy Kitty

It’s time for some Pixie pic spam! I take a lot of photos of my cat Pixie – I mean look at that face?! She’s so cute and silly. But most of all she’s really lazy.
Lately I’ve been finding her on my pillow when I wake up!
Even though there’s a box just for her behind her.. she preferred to check out this basket instead.

One of Pixie’s favorite things is plastic sacks. (I always supervise her when she’s in one for safety reasons of course.) I think she loves the sound of the crinkle!

After a long day of doing absolutely nothing, Pixie crashes on the couch.

Sometimes I crash on the couch, too, and Pixie loves to snuggle!

And when I’m at my computer desk, she’s not too far away. Pixie feels nice and cozy in her kitty castle.

I hope you enjoyed this Pixie pic spam!
Do you have a pet you take a ton of photos of?

Tutorial: Cinderella 2015 Cosplay

If you're like me then you totally fell in love with all the costumes in the new live action Cinderella movie! Lily James portrayed the princess perfectly! I knew right away that I had to have her dress in my life, but I was scared to take on such a project. Her dress is massive!! So with a little creativity I was able to recreate a version of that magnificent ballgown without breaking the bank. I realize I didn't make a 100% screen accurate cosplay and I'm okay with that. I still felt like a princess wearing this! I'm hoping this semi-homemade tutorial will help inspire someone else that might want to make Cinderella's gown. Enjoy!

A Day in the Park

Before the crazy ice storm hit my part of Texas, my mom and I went over to the park across from my apartment. It was a beautiful day and was so warm and sunny I eventually took my jacket off!! I am glad we adventured out before the temperature dropped below freezing the next day.
This park is called “Central Park” just north of Dallas.. It has statues and a water fountain (which sadly was not running.) There’s also a small river behind it and a little lake. I had fun walking around and saw a few other families taking photos. I just wish I had been coming here more often to take more pics!
My outfit:
Pokemon shirt – Hot Topic
Nyan cat hoodie – ThinkGeek
Pink phone purse – Vera Bradley
Boots – Uggs
Jeans – Express

Birthday Wish List 2013

My birthday is this month so I decided to make a list of some little (and mostly big) wishes I have!
“Message from Home” by Jeremiah Ketner
I have had my eye on this painting for quite some time now. The movie Tangled holds a magical place in my heart (I even have a post about it!), and this painting captures the essence of the story beautifully. I entered a Facebook contest on Jeremiah Ketner’s page to try and win this painting, but it just wasn’t written in the stars for me. So for now it stays on my ~wish list~..
King’s Body Jewelry has these beautiful Pink Howlite stone plugs for only $15! I wear a size 25mm (or 1 inch) plug in my ears, and they are usually super crazy expensive. Most of the time you’ll see me wearing Opalite plugs, but I really want these pink ones! 😛
My desktop computer that I use for eveerrrrything was purchased in 2007. I’ve only upgraded the operating system once when my hard-drive decided to crash three years ago. Honestly, most everything runs just fine still (knock on wood!) But I’m a tech geek, and I love to have the newest models. I still can’t decide if I should just upgrade to the latest OS, switch to a laptop, or get the bigger desktop. So that’s why I still have what I have 😛
Although I haven’t had any professional training with Adobe products, I find myself constantly using Photoshop for blog stuff, photos, and just for fun. I would love learn how to use Illustrator as well, and begin expanding my digital art skills. It costs quite a bit so this will probably stay on my ~wish list~ for awhile especially since I already have Photoshop.
When I first started dying my hair funky colors, I used Specials Effects from Hot Topic. They no longer carry that brand (they switched to RAW which I use now). But Special Effects has a wider range of colors, and the quality is amazing. I can’t find it in stores anywhere so you have to purchase them online now. I would love to have one of each color! 😛
I really really don’t need another 3DS XL .. but it’s so hard not to love this special edition one! I definitely plan on picking up the new game at least.

This replica of Thorin’s key looks uber magical as a pendent for a necklace. I would rock this all the time. It’d be especially cool to wear to a Renaissance faire. ThinkGeek offers it for $30 which is a little steep for me, but it says it’s an officially licensed collectible and comes in a “handsome” gift box!
:+:+:+:+:
So those are my crazy wishes for my birthday this year! According to my age I should probably be asking for more “grown up” things, but that will never happen! 😛 I will be a kid for life!

  1. I miss dying my hair! :'(
I just got the Pokemon 3DS, and my friend who works at Gamestop told me about the LoZ one…I was so sad. I might have to trade mine in! And that painting is really pretty!

  2. If need be, you can always switch over to Linux 13.10 without having to purchase a new laptop or desktop. No spyware, runs faster, you'll keep all of your files/applications/programs a LOT longer than Mac & Windows combined, and you can get similiar programs for free that resemble Illustrator, Photoshop, etc. At least try it!

    1. I've tried to switch over to GIMP, but I find it to be much less intuitive than Photoshop is. Not sure what a comparable program to Illustrator would be.

With Adobe switching from licensed purchasable products to a subscription model, it might be a challenge for Glitzy to get Illustrator anyway. The subscription's not very cheap either (not that the product ever was).

  3. This is a great wishlist. That painting is gorgeous!

  4. Those pink plugs are soooo cute! And don't ever grow up! Growing up is for suckers, lol.

  5. Happy early birthday! This is a perfect wishlist! 🙂
