Fiona Cosplay Tutorial

Since the Dallas Comic Con is this weekend (woo!) I decided to make a master post showcasing my Fiona cosplay. I have posted bits and pieces of the process, but this is a full detailed look at all the hard work I put into this costume. I didn’t get a chance to take any finished photos with the green body paint because I am nervous I won’t have enough for the convention. So after Saturday I am sure I will have plenty of pics to share of the completed look! But for now… enjoy this tutorial/process of Fiona’s costume from Shrek Forever After!

Warning: Lots of Photos!!

I started out by making the armor first, because I figured this would be pretty difficult for me. I had never made armor before.
It required a lot of steps. First, I made a pattern out of paper, cut out the foam, and glued some gauze to the back.
Then I gesso’d it (which acted like a primer), and then painted it. I did a couple coats so I could get a rustic look.

To bend the pieces of (now thick) foam I let them sit in these cups for a couple days.
Then, I punched holes in the sides and tied hemp string through it like shoe lace. This way I can tighten the armor as much as I like.
My next project was the necklace. I used Crayola Magic Mold to make the beads and claws. I also made the hilt of the dagger this way.
After painting it, I realized the green was way too dark.
So I redid that!

And here is a look at the painted hilt and the belt buckle. The buckle and blade of the dagger are made from foam, then gesso’d, then painted.

I hot glued the blade to the hilt.
Then made a holster for the dagger. This is secured with more string in case I want to take the dagger off for another project someday.
The next big step was the shirt, skirt, and belt. This fabric was from JoAnn’s.

Pixie was less than helpful, but oh so cute.
I traced a shirt I knew fit well onto the back of the light brown fabric.

Sorry this is upside down, lol.. Then I cut it out and sewed it.

This material was kind of hard to work with..

Here’s one sleeve finished!

Two sleeves and the skirt finished.. I was kinda happy with this, but the shirt was uncomfortable and the skirt looked a little long.
I decided to leave it as is.. so this is a look at the finished items so far. Just needed to do the belt and axe next.
The axe was made out of a cardboard pole and styrofoam.

I freehanded the shape of the blades on the foam.

Then made a huge mess cutting it out.

I stuck wooden sticks in the foam horizontally and hot glued it to the pole for support.

Then I gesso’d that bad boy.

Next, I painted the blades silver and bronze, and the pole a textured brown. I added sheet foam to the top of the pole to make it look like a broken piece of wood. The final steps were glueing on the rope and the fabric around the pole.

I wear my pajamas a lot when I work on projects.

The ears were made out of foam which I gesso’d and painted green. I drew a large lightbulb-ish shape and folded the skinny part at the bottom and hot glued it together.

Then I glued the ears onto a wire headband. I painted the headband with my bronze paint to blend it in with my hair better.
So here was a final fitting with all my pieces.. But I still wasn’t happy with how the shirt and skirt fit.
So I decided to remake the shirt. Oddly enough, I had a hard time finding a plain brown tshirt. I found this Zelda shirt at Ross Dress For Less in the little boys section. It was obviously way too short for me, so I bought two since it was only $4.
I turned the shirts inside out and lengthened it. Then I cut the neckline and added the stitches to the front.
The green skirt is the same one from before, but I decided to shorten it a little so you could see the dagger and holster on my thigh better.
I’m really happy now with how everything fits! The costume is very comfortable. That’s important when you go to a convention. I will be there all day Saturday as Fiona. The last thing I’ll need to do is apply the green body paint, and fluff up the wig some. I sure hope the makeup turns out okay.. Here’s to hoping!

Are you going to Dallas Comic Con 2013?
Will you be in costume?
Have you ever made an entire costume before?

  6. I was there over the weekend and saw you in the costume contest. You looked amazing! The green paint you used was perfect!! Great job all-around.

  7. Saw the final product and it did look great. What, however, is Gesso?

    ReplyDelete

    Replies

    1. Gesso is a canvas primer. It makes the foam sheets thicker and prevents the paint from seeping through and show up more vibrant.

Glitzy Geek Mail #1

I love the internet (a lot), but snail mail is so fun to send and receive! Here is some glitzy geeky mail an owl has delivered to me recently.
My Twitter friend @LadySquibbles16 and I have a lot in common, and we both enjoy tweeting about our love of different fandoms (most recently One Direction Oreos)! So when I received a package from her with a My Little Pony bag, Diana plushie, and a glitzy necklace I was ecstatic! Diana is modeling the gorgeous necklace, and Pixie loved meeting a new friend!

I’m so happy to be pen pals with Nerd Burger. We always have fun chats in our letters! And I especially loved the Harry Potter stickers and Frodo heart pin she included. I already put her pin on my jean jacket! You can see her other designs in her Etsy store. She also sent along a really cute comic about Mario Kart, and I love that she decorates the envelopes with fun stickers, too!
If you’d like to snail mail me or send a package I’d love to have a Glitzy Geek Mail #2!

Blue, purple & pink hair

So I recently colored my hair all over blue.. but have been washing it with hot water because I thought it was too dark. So then it turned purple and pink! But just an FYI… I bleached it out this evening so stay tuned for another hair post later on!

And this is a pic I saw in a magazine at the salon of the length I’d like my hair to get to. Growing it out is hard so I need inspiration 😛

  1. Dark blue doesn't quite look like "you."

  2. Hey just going through your different hair colors. I've had quite a few myself, right now I have purple. I've been thinking about going blue next and I just want to say that I think this blue on you looks great!

Happy Things #21

I just got back from Sci Fi Expo so I’ll be working on that post soon. For now here are lots of happy things to share with you! (Click on the photos to see them bigger.)
I have been working on decorating my room since I moved. Here is my makeup desk! I painted this myself and was using this in my salon. The moon mirror is from my room growing up that my parents thankfully kept. I love it!
I also love this colorful corner next to my bed. I think I might mount some shelves on that wall where the bulletin board is so I can put more toys and stuffed animals out. 😛

I am really late posting this but here’s a glimpse at some of the fun things I got for Christmas.

I found this Shredder Funko Pop! toy at the bookstore while at the mall. I would love to have all the turtles some day, too!

My hair is ridiculously thick and since I’ve been growing it out it’s really getting out of hand. I don’t think I’m ready to cut it yet so instead I bought some scrunchies to pull it up! These are so comfy to sleep in and add a pop of color to your outfit.

My mom taught me how to crochet when I was young, but I couldn’t find my crochet hook. So the other day I bought a new one and got some yarn! I learned how to make a flower from this YouTube video and attached a hair clip to the back. These Disney Princess inspired flowers and starfish rings are listed in my Etsy store

It was about this time last year that my dad and I began planning our trip to Disney World. So I think that’s why I am on such a Disney kick right now. We probably won’t be going back this year, so instead I am decking myself out in Disney gear. I got these awesome Little Mermaid leggings at Target for only $15! I even bought the movie on Blu-Ray and have already watched it twice.

When I found out one of my favorite tattoo artists Matt Van Cura was in town I knew I had to get something from him before he left. A couple years ago he tattooed my Harry Potter themed tattoo. It’s one of my absolute favorites. So I knew I could trust him to do an awesome job again. I got Ariel on my leg and am blown away by how amazing she came out. I love her so much!

This fun photo was taken at my friend Krystle Starr’s house. She and her fiancé needed some people to help film a video for All-Con. I had so much fun dancing and being goofy with all my friends! I went back a couple days later dressed as Ramona Flowers to film some more. You can watch the video here

My dad got tickets to a Dallas Stars hockey game for Christmas! I was so excited to go with him. We had pretty great seats and ate a ton of food. We were even featured on the big screen for a few seconds! I was happy the Stars won that night, too!
Pixie has been just as silly as ever. I love her so much =^.^=
The second picture is an app called Comic Touch 2.0. Maybe I’ll make a Pixie comic series!
:+:+:+:+:
What has made you happy lately? 🙂

  4. Your room looks great! I'm so jealous of that gorgeous mirror! You new tattoo is beautiful, too!!

  5. I love your vanity table and mirror. Pixie is super cute too!

  6. Lately the thing that has made me happy is getting my SDCC badges! My whole "crew" (we dubbed ourselves the Underground Railroad) got what they wanted.

    A regular Comic Con miracle!

(really, we're all STILL in shock about it).

  7. I love your make-up desk, it's just too awesome! ^^

  8. Your tattoo turned out amazing! I was thinking of getting a Harry Potter tattoo as well but I'm not quite sure what to get. Can I see pictures of yours for ideas?

  9. Your Ariel tattoo is stunning!!!!!!!!!! And by the way your happy corner in your room made my mind explode.

  10. Loving the Ariel tattoo. And so many cute plushies! Loving the tokidoki plush! Need that! I swear I see the ninja turtle pop figures everywhere! Moreso than the shreader. Hope you find them.

Heart of Texas Comic Con 2014

The Heart of Texas Comic Con was the first convention where I was invited to be a cosplay guest! I was super excited to travel out of Dallas to Waco, Tx for a weekend to spend with friends, fans and celebrities! This was the first year for this con, and I was honored to be asked to join other cosplayers as a guest and help judge the costume contest.
Since attending a convention with a booth is a little different than just going as a fan, I had to really prepare ahead of time. My friend Miranda over at A Bit of Geek asked me some questions about my experience as a first time exhibitor. Check out the interview here for all those details!
I chose to wear Legolas on Saturday since Manu Bennett was in attendance! He plays Azog the Defiler in The Hobbit.
My table was in the cosplay/fan club room. I brought cosplay prints and wizard wands to sell. I also gave out free stickers and buttons.
One of the coolest things was seeing my face in the program! I even had a guy ask me to autograph this page. Above me is Mariedoll. She is a very famous cosplayer and was super nice! She and Annaka Vader joined me in judging the costume contest.
This was my view from the stage during the contest. The crowd went from wall to wall!
I had a difficult time judging because all the contestants were really great. We narrowed it down and these were the top three winners.
Back at my booth the crowd on Saturday was very large! The dealer’s room was packed so I was glad to be in the open room so I could take pictures with fans easier.
Several of my friends came down from Dallas, too, including my friend Brandon! He surprised me with a custom made Asajj Ventress lightsaber hilt! I couldn’t believe it! I hope to make another Ventress cosplay soon so this is really great. Thanks again, Brandon!
On Saturday Manu Bennett had a Q&A so I stepped away from my table to watch some of it. He was so friendly and chatted with several members of the audience. (On Sunday I found the courage to go up to his table to shake his hand and say Hello, too!)
After the convention closed for the evening, my mom and I went to the mall. I saw this flyer at Hot Topic and had to snap a pic! Hot Topic is one of my favorite stores, and it was cool to see a flyer for a convention where I am a guest at!
On Sunday, the crowd was a little smaller. There were still a lot of people, but most were in the dealer’s room. My friend and fellow cosplay guest Krystle Starr found an empty table so we asked if we could share it in the busier room.
I wore Black Cat all day Sunday and let me tell you I will never wear this again! The mask, boots and corset I had on were so uncomfortable.
My favorite new friends I made were Dim n Wit the Fairy Brothers! They were so cheerful and were having a great time dancing with everyone.
It was a lot of fun being at a table for a change. I was able to chat with fans and tell them about my cosplay tutorials on my blog. I ran out of business cards which is a good sign! Overall my experience was amazing. The convention staff was super kind, and I enjoyed seeing a con from a different angle.
I also want to thank everyone that bought a print, wand or jewelry piece from me! Getting to meet you guys was my favorite part, and I am so grateful for all the support!
:+:+:+:+:
To view all my photos from the convention check out my Facebook album.
The Heart of Texas Comic Con has another event this fall. So be sure to follow them for updates because their first one was a huge success!

  7. Aww you got to see Manu. He was meant to go to Supanova (convention on the Gold Coast, Australia) last weekend but cancelled…. 🙁 your costumes look devine. Cosplayer booths have not really caught on here yet. I am sure it will change soon though as there is so many great cosplayers out there.

Meet the Sponsors: A Bit of Geek

Hey everyone! I’m excited to share my first “Meet the Sponsors” post. If you’ve checked out my Sponsors page you’ll notice that anyone who purchases a Large Ad will be introduced in a blog post as well. A Bit of Geek is an incredibly fun and informative site that I am sure all of you will enjoy learning more about! Miranda has provided us with some info and links about A Bit of Geek. I was able to meet Miranda at PAX Prime so I couldn’t be more excited to welcome her and her colleagues as a sponsor.
~GlitzyGeekGirl~
A Bit of Geek started as a hobby outlet back in May of 2010. I’ve always loved to write, journal, and document, but more than that I love to share with other people! I would ramble on over on my LiveJournal and Myspace, but after parking it on Facebook I lost the ability to blog. So, A Bit of Geek was born! Over the past (almost) four years now I have been working on growing my little corner of internet. I have moved from blogspot to independent hosting and encountered a lot of problems. I now have my feet mostly planted in WordPress and I expect more changes this year as I continue to mold A Bit of Geek to my ideal website! Early in 2013 I invited three other writers to join me to help expand the available content and add diversity to A Bit of Geek’s voice. The four of us write in harmony about video games, board games, music, comics, crafting projects, TV shows, funny lists, and more. We updated every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday!
Readers can expect game reviews, personal opinions on industry trends, informative write-ups, lots of pictures, top ten lists, art videos, the occasional tutorial, our experiences at geeky events, and a whole lot of talking about the things that we love. We encourage and enjoy feedback on our articles as well as on our Facebook page! Getting a discussion going is one of our main goals and is certainly one of my favorite things. The future of A Bit of Geek includes more crafting projects and tutorials, more frequent video content (art, funny, and miscellaneous), a product or two for sale, and more giveaways for our wonderful readers!
A Bit of Geek can be found all over the web. We have a presence on YouTube, Tumblr, Twitter, Facebook, and even a Pinterest and Google+ page! We are most active on Facebook, Twitter, and Tumblr and are happy to answer questions.
To get a taste of the A Bit of Geek experience, here are a few articles that I think really show us off!
Just one in a delightful series from Tom where he gives a fun and detailed rundown of a video game character.
A photo journey of my nephew’s 6th birthday party.
A hilarious list of very serious questions from Rachel.
A complete retelling of my magical night.
Zach gives a talk about the key role that music plays in our games.
A challenging and hair pulling list that Tom forced us to write, but now you all know us a little bit better!
And if that’s not enough, here are the two most recent videos that we’ve posted!
Thanks for checking us out! We hope to see you in the comments sections 😀

Sponsoring GlitzyGeekGirl

I have decided to get back with Passionfruit since they had a discount on their memberships. I was with them for awhile when they were free, and was kinda upset that they started charging for their use. It mainly bothered me because my ad prices really don’t even cover the cost of having one of their memberships. But I’m hoping to do a better job about posting sponsors so I decided to try it!
For me, having my ad on other blog sites has really brought in a lot of traffic! Now that GlitzyGeekGirl has grown, I want to offer that same chance for other bloggers, artists, or store owners. Ads are shown to the right of my blog on my sidebar and come in different sizes and prices. Like I said earlier, I really don’t make a profit off these ads.. They are here to help you grow your business or blog and the money goes right back into running this website.
So please visit my Sponsor page and take a look at some of the options available. Since I kinda missed offering a Cyber Monday sale .. here’s a code to save $1 off a medium sized ad – GLITZYONE

Ikkicon 2012

Literally just got back from my road trip to Austin, TX for Ikkicon and was so excited about it that I just had to blog right away! It was very unplanned and spur of the moment so I didn’t have time to make a new cosplay. This was my first time to Ikkicon and although the size of the venue (like the dealer’s room and the panels) was smaller the amount of people was tremendous! As soon as I walked into the lobby I was blown away by how many people were dressed up in cosplay. Everyone had a wig on or ears or SOMETHING! It was so cool to see! I was most excited to meet up with several friends like Eric (we’ve been friends since high school!) and his girlfriend Marianne, Mia Moore who is my new BBFF (best blogger friend forever), Jonathan (who I met at AnimeFest), and Payton (also from AnimeFest and Fan Days) … So check out the pics and enjoy the anime overload!

Mia as Ramona Flowers & me as Rainbow Dash
My favorite part was the gaming room.

Jonathan as Doctor Whooves

Steampunk Mr. Freeze and Poison Ivy
1st Place winners of the cosplay contest
From the movie 9
I think he won Best in Show in the cosplay contest.

Marianne as Seras Victoria from Hellsing

Payton as Dark Zelda.. And that was a great Link but I don’t know his name

What’s better than one Rainbow Dash? Two!

Jack Skellington and Zero
Sunday I decided to dress up as a Sailor Moon fan 😉
This was the swag I picked up.. Luna and Artemis plushes, some cute bows, and a free sticker from Cosplay in America – really cool site and super nice guy!

And this was my view from my hotel room! Austin is pretty cool!

Holiday Wish List

I know it’s kinda late to be posting a holiday wishlist with the world ending tomorrow and Christmas on Tuesday, but I figured it’s better late than never 🙂
Kit Kat Clock from Fred Flare, $54

Mini Starfish Pin from Sparkle Cove, $19
Unicorn Pendant Necklace from Betsey Johnson (sold out now.. doh!)
Legend of Zelda Shield Replica from ThinkGeek, $69.99
Carly Tufted Headboard from Target, $349.99
SmartCat Ultimate Cat Scratching Post from Petsmart, $69.99 (for Pixie of course)
Well those are my more expensive and totally unneeded items on my wish list.
But a girl can dream right!
What are some things on your wish list?

Intergalactic Planetary

Do you ever wake up with a song in your head? Singing or humming a tune that’s super random? I always wonder if it’s some sign that it MUST be the first song I listen to or something bad will happen. I mean why else would “Intergalactic” by the Beastie Boys be on my mind? So I googled the lyrics and put it first on my playlist.  Interesting and cute song 😛

“If you try to knock me you’ll get mocked
I’ll stir fry you in my wok
Your knees’ll start shaking and your fingers pop
Like a pinch on the neck of Mr. Spock”

So anyone doing something fun before the end of the world tomorrow?
I am booked all evening at the salon so my clients can go out in style! 😀

Pink Shelves & Hobby Lobby Brackets

As you saw in my previous post about my new salon, I have some bright pink shelves up on the wall!
Here’s a quick little tutorial on how I made them. 🙂
This was a fun and sorta easy project if you have time to make shelves from scratch! I have seen this project on Pinterest and also saw my friend make some. I say “sorta easy” because it was a little hard to screw the brackets into the wall and make sure everything was level. But other than that it was a breeze!
I got these brackets at Hobby Lobby for only $6.99.
Sometimes you can catch them 50%, too!
I also got some screws from Lowe’s. I got two different sizes.. Smaller ones for going into the board and longer ones to go into the wall.
We later had to use an anchor in the wall to make sure they were secure.
I used a poplar board from Lowe’s.. You can get different lengths.
And sand it first before you paint it.

I bought paint from Hobby Lobby appropriately named “Party Pink” for $5.99.
Use a satin varnish for a beautiful shine.

A finished board! Be sure to do both sides since you will see the underneath.
I was so nervous Pixie was going to jump on the boards. Then we’d have little pink paw prints everywhere. Wait.. that would have been kinda cute! 😀

After trying it both ways, it was easier to screw the brackets into the board first and then the wall.

Tada! What do you think? I sure love my new shelves! I am thinking about making a long one to go over my bed since I can’t find a good headboard. Have you ever made something totally from scratch?

Hair by Anna Lee

As some of you may know – I do hair! I was rooming with some friends for awhile but a month or so ago I got my own salon room! It’s a huge accomplishment, and I am so proud to have my own business. Decorating the room was a lot of fun, and I have another post about how I made the pink shelves with the brackets on the wall. I am so thankful my clients have followed me to my new salon. So if you need your hair done and you live around the Dallas area come see me!
You can “Like” me on Facebook, too!

Review: Denny’s The Hobbit Menu!

In honor of The Hobbit being released this week and with inspiration from GeekyGlamorous's post, I decided to give the special Hobbit menu at Denny's a try!

I was pretty excited about this and was quoting LoTR to my dad on the way. He had no idea what I was talking about, but he was eager to eat some food regardless. 🙂

When we sat down they brought us some samples of the Radagast's Red Velvet Pancake Puppies. And holy cow they were good! We told the waitress we were here just for the Hobbit menu and she laughed and gave us some time to take pics 😛

I eventually decided on the Shire Sausage Skillet with scrambled eggs. My dad ordered the Slam so we could try the Pumpkin Patch Pancakes, Seed Cake French Toast, and Shire Sausage. We were feeling breakfast to say the least!

The food was pretty good.. my sausage wasn't the best but the eggs and veggies were delicious. Dad's french toast was awesome and we just HAD to order some of the Red Velvet Pancake Puppies to take home with us. The coolest part were the free trading cards they give out if you order a Hobbit meal. Our waitress gave us 3 packs!

My 27th Birthday

So last month I turned another year older… I have finally reached that part in my life where I might start lying about my age 😉  .. Oh well!! I still act like a kid so I figured I’d celebrate like one.. My family and I ate at Gatti Town and had pizza! It’s definitely my favorite food ever. Afterwards, we played some games where I won a cute little dinosaur figure. Later, we opened some presents, and I got some Juicy Couture perfume, MLP collection toys, a Betsy Johnson and Kate Spade necklace and the coolest leopard hat! Then for dessert I had a strawberry cupcake. It was such a great birthday!! Thanks to my family for being so awesome 🙂

Makeup, Fashion, and Art Tutorials

When I am not blogging I am still usually at the computer .. Here’s a few tutorials I’ve found lately that I find cool on the net!
Really cool tutorial by Kandee Johnson for a Betty Boop costume. How cute is this?!
These two girls at Bubble My Licorice have loads of cute posts. They’ve done some hair and DIY fashion tutorials, too.
I enjoyed watching this video of Miss Leilani Joy draw Ramona Flowers. She gives some great tips on drawing faces. She is such a good artist!
The Dainty Squid shared a neat plant pressing tutorial.. I am a sucker for stopping in my tracks to pick up a pretty or unique leaf. Would be great to save them!
Have you watched or read any good tutorials lately? I made some cute shelves using Hobby Lobby brackets recently that I need to share someday!

Pixie Kitty Photo Spam

I have done a few cool things lately.. Like my birthday, Black Friday shopping, redecorate my salon (again!), see Breaking Dawn 2’s premiere, eat at Denny’s for The Hobbit meals, and paint some craft projects.. But since I don’t have those posts typed up YET…. Here are some cute pics of Pixie!! 🙂
She loves to help during raids on EQ2.. I bet she’s thinking “Kill the add, cancel the detriment, joust!”
(my guildies will understand, hehe)

Just chillin’ 😉

“Sacks make me hyper!”

Pixie and her BFF Rainbow Dash

Big yawn!

These might be my most favorite pics of Pixie! She looks like a prairie dog! She was giving herself a bath and heard something. Haha!
I call this Pixie’s “pink puff” .. She loves to sit by me when I am at the computer, and I found this cute pink cat bed at Petsmart.
Looking so pretty on my bed 🙂

Check out those eyes!! Pascal from Tangled had been hanging out on the back of the couch watching us.

Then Pascal photobombed us!! Promise I didn’t even plan this 😛

March Thoughts

Another month has passed already?! It sure seems like 2016 is zipping by! I would have loved to have filmed March vlog, but there just hasn’t been enough time in the day to do so. I hope you don’t mind another blog post then! :o)

March actually was a lot happier than February. I was recovering from a lot of defeats and have taken time to reflect on how to improve myself. I made a list of some memorable moments from March so let’s dive in!

Dyed hair – One of the most exciting changes this month was dying my hair back to pink. Last October I shaved my head and have been letting it grow without any bleach or dye. It was getting about an inch or so long and was just a boring dark brown color. Since I don’t really have a plan on what to do with it, I decided to dye it pink again! Even though I still wear wigs from time to time, I enjoy having my colorful ‘do back.

Gaming – Let’s start with EQ Next. This is a game that was announced back when I attended SOE Live several years ago. I’ve always been a big Ever Quest fan and was really excited for EQ Next. Well sadly, they announced that the game will no longer be happening. It broke my heart to read about it. I may need to revisit EQ2 soon. In happier news, I’ve been playing a lot of Dragon Mania Legends which is a mobile app game that is very easy and addicting. In March, they released a new “Clans” feature where you can group with friends to earn new rewards. It’s one of the only mobile games I’ve actually stuck with now for a nearly year! Finally let’s get into a recap of Guild Wars 2. This month I decided to make the legendary shield The Flameseeker Prophecies. I had almost all the materials for it and really liked the design so I just went for it. A few days later the devs announced that they were postponing the release of new legendary weapons indefinitely! What!! So that means all this time waiting for the new weapons that they promised with the expansion won’t be happening after all. I admit I was pretty bummed about this news. I would have made the sword Bolt instead of the shield, but I was waiting for the new sword to come out. I guess that won’t happen so now I will be making Bolt next. Some good things that happened in GW2 was the new raid wing, the return of the Bunny Ears and the big giveaway party I hosted on my stream. I gave away lots of prizes and had a fun time in Lions Arch with my friends and guildies. I’ll be hosting a giveaway on the last Friday of every month so if you missed it you can join us for the next one!

Moving – You can read the whole story on this blog post. But the TLDR version is I made a trip down to Houston to look for an apartment and find a new job. I found a very nice place that would be available mid April so I made the jump and signed a lease! I’m nervous and a little sad to be leaving Dallas, but this will be a good opportunity for me. It will be fun to explore a new place and also get back in to the beauty industry for my career. So I am looking forward to the move. It’s just been very hectic now trying to organize, clean, and pack my things in preparation.

Divergent – I saw Allegiant in theaters this month. Here’s my mini review of the new movie: I’ve been a big fan of the books and really loved the first movie. The second movie was okay but seemed too heavy on CGI. I was hoping the 3rd installment of the series would redeem itself but it left me going home really unhappy. It’s like they totally forgot about telling a good story and focused all of their money and energy on visual effects again. Also, Tris just seemed very unlike herself and lost all of her character development. Many of the scenes and lines came off cheesy and nearly made me laugh (and not in a good way.) The only thing I enjoyed about the movie was Four. The actor played his role well and the character made smart decisions and looked like a badass. I enjoyed his moments more than any others, but it still wasn’t enough to get me excited for the last movie due next year.

Easter – It was a little weird having Easter so early. Isn’t it usually in April? My family and I kept things pretty laid back and decided to order pizza for the weekend. I also got some cute cards in the mail and had a great day!

Store – While cleaning out my room and closet I found tons of nice purses, jewelry and decor that I just no longer use -or never used to begin with – and decided to open a Storenvy! I have had 2 sales so far and hope that my other items will find a new home soon. The money will help go towards my move, too! omglitzy.storenvy.com

Pixie update – This actually happened today rather than in March but since it’s fresh on my mind I wanted to fill you in! I took Pixie in for her 2 month check up on the state of her gums and teeth and the vet said things are still looking good! I’m glad the few teeth she has left are doing alright so she won’t need any removed any time soon. I let the vet know that I am moving to Houston and it was a little sad to say goodbye. They’ve been a great clinic to go to and have really taken good care of Pixie. I hope I can find another nice vet in Houston.
That’s about all I can think of for March! Overall I would say it was a very good month. ^.^

Wig Review! Kamo Wig from Amazon

Hey everyone! I made my first “review video” for my YouTube channel!!! It’s all about a wig I have been wearing a lot lately that I purchased from Amazon. As you may know, I own and wear a lot of wigs. I’ve been meaning to make reviews for them so I’m really excited to finally share this with you!
The Kamo 26″ Layered Wig was purchased from Amazon by ME! I was not paid or asked to make this review. I was looking for a natural wig to wear on my Twitch streams and came across it on Amazon. It had decent reviews and for only $16.99 I figured it was worth the try. Turns out it’s one of my all time favorite wigs now! I loved it so much I bought two – one to leave long and another to trim a little shorter. I’ve been wearing it a lot lately and it looks and feels very natural. Please check out my video for more details and a better look at it! This wig would be great for cosplayers or anyone that is on a budget and looking for a nice blonde wig.

It's to be a princess, of course! I had been looking for an affordable Rapunzel crown for quite some time but sadly could only find child sizes. So one night I decided to make the crown myself with whatever materials I had laying around.
And to help other lost princesses I decided to make a tutorial so you can become royalty as well!

Halloween 2014

You might think that a cosplayer would go all out on Halloween with an elaborate costume. Well that is usually not the case. Haha! I would say most of my cosplay friends actually enjoy buying either a store bought costume or wearing something more simple. For me, I have been dying to wear this Korilakkuma Kigurumi I bought at AKon. I dressed it up with my pink wavy wig from Gothic Lolita Wigs!

Most of the day I played Guild Wars 2. If only all the people I grouped with that day knew what I was wearing behind the computer! lol
Even my character in game was dressed up for the Halloween festivities.

My family and I ordered pizza. Yum! My favorite!

Finally, that evening we were ready to hand out the candy bags my mom and I made. Each bag had several candy bars and crackers and other sweets in them.

I had a lot of fun giving out candy to the kiddos! One parent asked if I was a polar bear. But most of the kids said they liked my outfit. There was a block party going on down our street so once that ended all the kids came to the door at once. It kinda bummed me out because they were rushing and I was rushing and I didn’t get to see their costumes very well. I do remember three kids were dressed as crayons. I think they were my favorite!

Healthy Hair Color Tips: Bleaching and Funky Colors

A question I am asked a lot is “How do you keep your hair so healthy?” Well let me first admit that my hair has been through a lot! But being a hairstylist that’s quite normal. We love to change our hair color often! It can take a toll on the strength and integrity of your hair strands. So over the years I’ve figured out what works best for *my* hair. I’m hoping this post will help others that might need some hair care advice, but remember everyone’s hair is different. I’ve been doing hair professionally since 2007, and I’ve seen firsthand the effects various dyes and products can do on hair. So definitely talk to your stylist for a professional opinion because they will know best!
For my own hair, I bleach the new growth (roots) with Wella’s Blondor and 40 volume developer. If I need to strip the color out of the ends of my hair I will use a lower volume that is not as strong. 40 volume on the ends of your hair is a bad idea! Sometimes I’ll wet my ends and shampoo it lightly then lather in some 40 vol bleach. That dilutes it a little and won’t be as harsh on your hair.
I typically let bleach sit on my hair for about 30 minutes under a shower cap. If you plan on doing a bright, funky color then you need your hair as light as possible and may need to sit longer. The best way to explain this is to picture a white piece of paper and different color crayons. The colors will be bright on the white paper, but if you took a darker piece of paper the colors won’t be as vibrant.
Once my hair is light enough, I rinse the bleach out with cold water (yes cold cold) and shampoo it with It’s A 10 Keratin shampoo. When coloring, I don’t use conditioner afterwards. This way my hair is more porous and the funky color will last longer.
Then I gently blowdry my hair until it’s completely dry and plan what color I want to do next. Lately I’ve been doing pastels. To make a pastel dye I squeeze a bunch of conditioner into a bowl. (I use any cheap conditioner since I use a lot of it. Just make sure it’s white. I used a blue one once and it didn’t lighten my dye.) Add some drops of color to your conditioner and stir. If it’s too light then keep adding more color until you like it. Here are some brands of color I use:
When you like the color in your bowl, start putting it on your hair. Always start at your scalp and work down the hair strand. Be sure to take small sections and completely saturate the hair. Funky colors will last longer if you really soak the hair in it. Then I put on another shower cap and let it sit for at least an hour. The longer the better! Most funky colors are demi-permanent, which means they don’t have any ammonia in them. They are not as harmful to your hair. Plus most of your concoction is conditioner and letting it sit on your hair for 1 hour+ is awesome. Your hair is so happy right now.
Once it’s time to rinse I use cold cold water again and let it run until it looks clear in the sink. I don’t shampoo or add any more conditioner to it. I just gently towel dry it and then let it air dry quite bit.
When I’m ready to blow dry I first add a quarter size amount of It’s A 10 Keratin Serum. The keratin helps rebuild the strength in your hair after the bleaching. Then I blow dry with a vent brush and flat iron as normal. After that I add another dime size amount of It’s A 10 Keratin Serum to give it a smooth and shiny finish.
It’s important not to shampoo your hair too often. I probably only wash my hair once a week. The natural oils in your hair are great moisturizers for dryness. I swear I am not endorsed by It’s A 10, but it’s also what I shampoo and condition with in-between coloring! I used a lot of products at the salon I worked at, and it’s the one I liked most. A more affordable alternative is the TRESemme Anti-Breakage collection. I’ve witnessed it work very well!
Finally, be sure to get regular trims to take care of any dead-ends, and try to avoid too much sun damage which can fade hair color and dry it out.
I hope this was helpful! Let me know! 🙂

Happy Things #23

Here are some things that have put a smile on my face lately!! 🙂
I ordered the purple macaron pillow from Squishables! It’s a lot bigger than I expected and is great for lounging around while reading or watching TV.
Pixie had a snuggle session with Pascal. They’re best of buds, aww!

I play Guild Wars 2 on and off again and laughed when I met this cute froggie the other day.
(For you, Ser Frog!)
A couple weeks ago I dyed my hair all over purple. There’s some pics on my Instagram (@glitzygeekgirl), but I thought it looked a little too dark. So I bleached it out and went with a pastel pink/purple! I added some more tone to it since this pic, too, and like it a lot!

Aren’t these rainbow sandals totes adorbz?! (lol) I got them at DSW, and the brand is Reef. Reef makes the comfiest sandals in the world.
I couldn’t find a source, but I loved this kitty wishing on stars.

What has made you happy lately?

Short Hair and Loving it

Having long hair was a goal of mine for many years. I wanted it long like a princess! But in reality I almost always wore up in a ponytail to get it out of my face. The length also made it more difficult for me to color it. So I’ve been toying with the idea to go back short. One night after I washed it I grabbed the scissors and just cut the tail off. My philosophy on this was if I “ruin” the length then I’ll *have* to cut it short! No turning back! I am SO glad I did it. It feels so much better to have it short and thinned out now. It’s also so easy to wear wigs for my cosplays. And the best part was it cut my drying time in half! I’m pretty happy with pink right now, but I want to experiment with more colors soon. 🙂
I cut it all myself but I don’t recommend trying this at home! I have been doing my own hair for over 10 years.
And here’s a picture of the color I used. It’s RAW’s Fuschia Fatale mixed with a lot of conditioner to lighten it some. I let it sit for an hour or so on my head then rinse with cool water! 🙂

New Hair! Hot Pink & Half Shaved

A few weeks ago I talked myself into cutting my hair into a pixie cut! I just have A LOT of hair and it’s ridiculously thick and wavy. I have had it short before but I wanted to go extra short this time. Another reason I want a pixie cut is because I love to color my hair frequently. With the length it takes WAY too long and too much hair dye.
So I grabbed my clippers (or buzzers) and a 4 guard (size of the attachment) and went to town! I wanted to keep the top kinda spiky so I piled it up into a pony tail to cut later and shaved the sides first.

Well after I did the sides I kinda looked at it and liked it! I thought.. Hey I might as well rock this for a day or two before I cut it all off.
I think the real reason I liked it is because it reminded me of Sokka from Avatar: The Last Airbender 😀

If I was going to leave the cut alone then I knew I still had a big job ahead to color it. This was after one bleaching and kinda looks like a My Little Pony tail!

Since it was still purple and kinda yellowy I decided to bleach it again so I could have a total change.

I mixed some RAW Fuchsia Fatale with a lot of conditioner and applied it to dry hair. Then I let it sit on my hair for an hour.

After an hour I rinsed it with COLD water and let it air dry since it’d been through a lot! This is what it looks like down .. it’s like you can’t even tell I shaved half of it off!

And here is what it looks like straight.

Most of the time I wear it up in a pony tail .. Like Sokka! 😀
It’s already grown out a bit now.. So one of these days soon I will be coloring it again. I know I will eventually cut it into a short pixie, but for now this is fun and different.

OMGLITZY: My Favorite Movies

My Favorite Movies

Movies are so expensive these days.. So I don’t really go to the theater much. If I go to one then I must REALLY like it! I do enjoy going to midnight showings at theaters. It’s fun to see the “super fans” all dressed up and waiting in line for hours with me. Most of my favorite movies are either chick flicks or fantasy. Although there’s one major exception to that.. I’m sure you’ll notice when you read it. 🙂

In no particular order:

How To  Deal
-I remember seeing this in the theater a couple of times in high school. It really portrays everything life can throw at you (marriage, divorce, break ups, friendships, pregnancy, death, etc) but in simple terms so as not to make the movie feel too serious. I love the music in it as well.

The Departed
-This is my curve ball I mentioned earlier. It’s definitely not a chick flick.. and no way near fantasy. It’s more of a drug lord movie (lol) .. So I’m not sure why I love it so much. Maybe Leonardo Di Caprio has something to do with it? Or the use of the Dropkick Murphy’s songs? 😛

Empire Records
-This move is just all around COOL. Each character is so different and interesting. They all have great qualities and then major problems at the same time. One of my favorite things to do as a kid was go to a CD store. We had one called Hastings back home, and it’s still a place I like just hanging out in. This movie also has one of my favorite quotes – “Damn the man!”

Tangled
-Probably the newest movie on my list (besides Hunger Games). I am a big big big Disney girl. I love all the princesses. And until Tangled my favorite Disney movies were Aladdin and Hercules. Tangled was beautifully animated. And Mandy Moore as the voice of Rapunzel is such a joy! Her songs really touch me. I’m a just a sappy romantic I guess.

Sweet November
-In this film the main character is very odd. She knows she’s a little out there.. and she uses it to help random strangers that are trapped in a business-focused world find their inner freedom. I relate to Charlize Theron’s character.. I live in my own world, too. I cry every time I watch it. And I just love the song “Only Time” by Enya.

Scott Pilgrim vs The World
-Based off the comics by Bryan Lee O’Malley, this adaptation is humorous, game-like, and greatly casted! As seen in my Comic Con post, I am a big fan of Ramona Flowers. I laugh out loud at certain scenes and also enjoyed the movie’s soundtrack. Check out “Black Sheep” by Metric.

The Goonies
-There really is nothing better than a good 80’s movie. There are so many good quotes from this. I actually have “Slick Shoes” tattooed on my ankles. The cast totally rocked and the plot is interesting throughout. I enjoy watching this when I’m in need of something simple but adventurous. No need for crazy CGI.. just good a ole pirate treasure hunt.

Stardust
-When I rented Stardust I wasn’t sure if it was going to be any good. I had read a cool quote from the movie online, but also read bad reviews. So I wasn’t expecting to enjoy it as much as I did. It’s a beautiful fantasy kingdom, and the cast was very funny at times (Robert De Niro in drag!)  I just wish they played up the love story a little more. Here’s the quote I liked, A philosopher once asked, “Are we human because we gaze at the stars, or do we gaze at them because we are human?” Pointless, really… “Do the stars gaze back?” Now *that’s* a question.”

Lord of The Rings, Harry Potter, Twilight & The Hunger Games
-I grouped these together because they are all a series. Although I haven’t read LoTR, the others were all favorite books of mine. So naturally I love the movies! Any time LoTR is on tv you bet I am watching it. Although it’s long, I can’t help but be mesmerized by the enchanting story. I’ll agree that Twilight has some bad acting in it. But I’m still a Twi-hard. 😛 I also have loved Harry Potter since the first book was released. So following it for all these years has given me some magical memories. I am new to The Hunger Games.. but I was instantly hooked after reading the 3 books in 2 days. The movie was great in my opinion. The cast did a wonderful job, and I am looking forward to the next movies.

Honorable mentions:
The Princess Bride, Enchanted, 27 Dresses, How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days, The Labyrinth, Ever After, Underworld, My Big Fat Greek Wedding, & Dirty Dancing

After typing this I realized I like quite a few movies! I really really want to watch The Princess Bride and Tangled now. I’m sure I left out some good ones, too.
What is your all time favorite movie? Can you recommend any movies I need to see?

    1. Amazing list!! A few that stood out for me were Romeo and Juliet, One Hour Photo, Saw, Love Actually, Catch Me If You Can, and The Breakfast Club … Those would definitely be on my list, too! Except I would have the new R&J cause I love Leo sooo much 🙂 And you're right – he shouldn't have died in Titanic. MythBusters even said so!!!

  5. The Lord of the Rings trilogy is really high on my list too! Good pick.

I wouldn't count it as one of my favorite movies, but I enjoyed Stardust a lot. Way more than I expected to. I only recently realized that it was based on a book (which I haven't read) written by Neil Gaiman. He writes some really great stories.

I'm not very good at making favorites lists. I'd definitely include Lord of the Rings. The Kill Bill movies are on the list. Fight Club is a favorite (I'll give a shoutout to another great modern author here, Chuck Palahniuk).

Tree of Life is a movie that I saw recently, not really knowing what to expect from it. I was mesmerized and ultimately blown away by it. I think I'm obligated to include it on my list of favorite movies just because I've never had a movie experience like it before. It's really hard to explain, but I loved it.

The Breakfast Club is my favorite 80s movie, so it earns a spot on the list.

    And finally, The Big Lebowski.

I'm sure I'm overlooking plenty of other great movies that I love, but these are the ones that readily come to mind.

    1. Worst movie: Howard the Duck. More favorites, A Few Good Men, As Good As It Gets, Predator, Alien, War Games, Glory, The Devil Wears Prada (clothes are nice), Shallow Grave is just plain strange.

I will have to check out Tree of Life.

  8. What are your feelings for The Matrix and then in turn the whole trilogy?

  9. There was a band called Slick Shoes too which was a late 90's early 00's punk(ish) band. They were big Goonies fans (Check out the album "Wake Up Screaming").
My FAVES: The Goonies, Empire Records (we watched this like once a week in college), Bridget Jones' Diary (my weirdly placed chick flick), The Boondock Saints, and, The Dark Knight and more recently Wreck it Ralph (I was actually quite miffed at how good this was), Monty Python and the Holy Grail, Little Nemo: Adventures in Slumberland, Howl's Moving Castle, The Empire Strikes Back & Return of the Jedi(original theatrical release…none of the touch ups from Lucas on both of these); Heavyweights; South Pacific; Sound of Music; Amelie; Casper; Ghost World; Hello Dolly; Kill Bill Volume 1; Love Actually; Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels; The Great Muppet Caper; Newsies;Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist; Rushmore; Serenity; SLC Punk; Tokyo Godfathers; Snatch…
    Ok…I think that's a safe list to end with…
