OMGLITZY: G33K3: The Con

G33K3: The Con

G33K3 (pronounced “geeky”) was a new convention in McKinney, Tx. It was quite a bit smaller than others, but that’s great because it was only $10 to get in! Although it was a 3 day convention, I only went on Saturday. I still had a really fun time!
I decided not to wear a costume, but that gave me the chance to wear some fun clothes for a change.
Batman shirt – ThinkGeek
Batman leggings – Hot Topic
Black skater skirt – Wet Seal
Pink checkered shoes – Vans
Legend of Zelda earrings – Ragin’ Gauges
When I walked in I was shocked by how many vendors were there!
The selection of items was incredible.

I was excited to see my friend Long Le with a table full of his handmade D20s!

Another booth had these amazing trinkets for sale.

My friend Geline hosted an armor making panel, too. It was SO informative! I learned a lot about Worbla and craft foam.

Several people were in cosplay, including my friend Enasni Volz. She also had handmade charms for sale at her table.

Fangirls: Dames of the Round Table is an all female video cast you can watch on Sundays on Deep Ellum Air. I enjoyed seeing Taylor and Natalie at their table!
This photo was taken by Cosplay With Me of Morgan as Rapunzel and Krystle Starr as the Pink Panther! I wanted to share how cute their costumes were!
:+:+:+:
I hope this convention happens again next year because it was very well run. If they would advertise a little bit more then I imagine more and more people will come out!
Do you prefer bigger or smaller conventions?

  1. Looks like it was a blast! Smaller conventions are nice because you really feel like a part sometimes. But large ones are in the way that they affirm you're not alone in the 'verse type of thing.

Going to all types are the best. Kind of like food, you can't just try one thing once and decide from there (unless there's an allergy). Gotta give it a few shots before deciding I think. 🙂

  2. That looks like it was super fun! Those giant D20's look like they belong on my nerd wall 😛 so cool!

Free Comic Book Day 2014

This year for Free Comic Book Day (May 3) I dressed up as my favorite female comic character – Ramona Flowers!

There are several comic book stores in the Dallas/Fort Worth area, but I decided to visit Madness Games & Comics. It’s one of the biggest stores in Texas!

This is only one third of the store, and there’s usually rows and rows of tables for Friday Night Magic. They moved those out for the day to make room for the free comic books, artist Matthew Warlick, and two celebrity guests: Judge Reinhold and Mark Dodson (who voiced Jabba the Hutt!)

While waiting in line for my free comics, I found the droid I was looking for!

I picked out 5 new comics, but was sad that the Avatar issue was already gone. I did get a Guardians of the Galaxy comic, though!

After I picked out my comics, I met Judge Reinhold! He was in Beverly Hills Cop, Fast Times at Ridgemont High, and The Santa Clause.

On my way home, I took off my Ramona Flowers’ wig only to reveal more Ramona hair! I love how nicely short hair fits under wigs.
:+:+:+:+:
Did you celebrate Free Comic Book Day?

OMGLITZY: Free Comic Book Day 2013

Free Comic Book Day 2013

This year Free Comic Book Day fell on May 4th which is also Star Wars Day!
So this was an epic Saturday to say the least. I was able to celebrate both since I have my own salon now. I wore a Star Wars t-shirt that I bought while at Disney World, and I was able to visit Lone Star Comics on my lunch break! It was a super cool day!

They held a costume contest at the store, and this girl looked so awesome!

I tried wearing Leia buns, too!

At this location, you got to pick out three different comics! It was hard deciding which ones to get. But I love the ones I picked!

:+:+:+:+:+:
Did you pick up your free comics at your local comic store?
What are some of your favorite comics?
Did you go see Man of Steel today?

4 comments:

  1. Your leia buns are adorable. Glad you had a rad time. My fave comics of all time are Unlikely by Jeffrey Brown, French Milk by lucy Knisley, Ghost world by Daniel Clowes and She hulk- Single green female.

    ReplyDelete

  2. I have never been able to get into comics/mangas/graphic novels for some reason. I like reading regular books, I like a lot of the stories portrayed in comics, and I like some of the comic artwork. But for some reason, when you put it all together, it never seems to keep my attention or excite me the same way reading a book or watching a movie does.

The notable exception to this is the recent Interview with the Vampire: Claudia's Story. If you're not familiar with the original Interview with the Vampire (book or movie will suffice), I'm not sure that this graphic novel would make much sense or be that fulfilling. If you read it knowing the larger story, it serves as a nice alternate viewpoint. The art is nicely done too. It's well-drawn, and there's no color other than the occasional splash of red for blood.

But I'm glad you had fun at free comic day and enjoyed your comics!

  3. We're so glad you were able to come by and spend FREE COMIC BOOK DAY 2013 (as well as "STAR WARS" DAY — May the Fourth be with us!) at our Store! And THANK YOU SO MUCH for sharing your day and your experiences on your blog!

Since you work in the area, we hope we'll be seeing you at future FREE COMIC BOOK DAYS and for other upcoming special occasions! And, don't forget: WEDNESDAY IS ALWAYS NEW COMICS DAY!

Thanks again for letting us know about your amazing blog! Please let us know when you post future comics, gaming, collecting, or other cool content!

    All the best!

  4. AH LONESTAR PLANO!!!! Love that place, although my heart is at Madness (don't hate!). My husband and I hit up 2 comic book stores (Madness and Zeus)and managed to score 22 comics between the two of us. We completely forgot about Lonestar while we were out. I felt like butt though we pretty much scored all the comics we wanted.

OMGLITZY: Fiona Cosplay Tutorial

Fiona Cosplay Tutorial

Since the Dallas Comic Con is this weekend (woo!) I decided to make a master post showcasing my Fiona cosplay. I have posted bits and pieces of the process, but this is a full detailed look at all the hard work I put into this costume. I didn’t get a chance to take any finished photos with the green body paint because I am nervous I won’t have enough for the convention. So after Saturday I am sure I will have plenty of pics to share of the completed look! But for now… enjoy this tutorial/process of Fiona’s costume from Shrek Forever After!

Warning: Lots of Photos!!

I started out by making the armor first, because I figured this would be pretty difficult for me. I had never made armor before.
It required a lot of steps. First, I made a pattern out of paper, cut out the foam, and glued some gauze to the back.
Then I gesso’d it (which acted like a primer), and then painted it. I did a couple coats so I could get a rustic look.

To bend the pieces of (now thick) foam I let them sit in these cups for a couple days.
Then, I punched holes in the sides and tied hemp string through it like shoe lace. This way I can tighten the armor as much as I like.
My next project was the necklace. I used Crayola Magic Mold to make the beads and claws. I also made the hilt of the dagger this way.
After painting it, I realized the green was way too dark.
So I redid that!

And here is a look at the painted hilt and the belt buckle. The buckle and blade of the dagger are made from foam, then gesso’d, then painted.

I hot glued the blade to the hilt.
Then made a holster for the dagger. This is secured with more string in case I want to take the dagger off for another project someday.
The next big step was the shirt, skirt, and belt. This fabric was from JoAnn’s.

Pixie was less than helpful, but oh so cute.
I traced a shirt I knew fit well onto the back of the light brown fabric.

Sorry this is upside down, lol.. Then I cut it out and sewed it.

This material was kind of hard to work with..

Here’s one sleeve finished!

Two sleeves and the skirt finished.. I was kinda happy with this, but the shirt was uncomfortable and the skirt looked a little long.
I decided to leave it as is.. so this is a look at the finished items so far. Just needed to do the belt and axe next.
The axe was made out of a cardboard pole and styrofoam.

I freehanded the shape of the blades on the foam.

Then made a huge mess cutting it out.

I stuck wooden sticks in the foam horizontally and hot glued it to the pole for support.

Then I gesso’d that bad boy.

Next, I painted the blades silver and bronze, and the pole a textured brown. I added sheet foam to the top of the pole to make it look like a broken piece of wood. The final steps were glueing on the rope and the fabric around the pole.

I wear my pajamas a lot when I work on projects.

The ears were made out of foam which I gesso’d and painted green. I drew a large lightbulb-ish shape and folded the skinny part at the bottom and hot glued it together.

Then I glued the ears onto a wire headband. I painted the headband with my bronze paint to blend it in with my hair better.
So here was a final fitting with all my pieces.. But I still wasn’t happy with how the shirt and skirt fit.
So I decided to remake the shirt. Oddly enough, I had a hard time finding a plain brown tshirt. I found this Zelda shirt at Ross Dress For Less in the little boys section. It was obviously way too short for me, so I bought two since it was only $4.
I turned the shirts inside out and lengthened it. Then I cut the neckline and added the stitches to the front.
The green skirt is the same one from before, but I decided to shorten it a little so you could see the dagger and holster on my thigh better.
I’m really happy now with how everything fits! The costume is very comfortable. That’s important when you go to a convention. I will be there all day Saturday as Fiona. The last thing I’ll need to do is apply the green body paint, and fluff up the wig some. I sure hope the makeup turns out okay.. Here’s to hoping!
:+:+:+:+:+:+:+:+:
Are you going to Dallas Comic Con 2013?
Will you be in costume?
Have you ever made an entire costume before?

  7. Saw the final product and it did look great. What, however, is Gesso?

    ReplyDelete

    1. Gesso is a canvas primer. It makes the foam sheets thicker and prevents the paint from seeping through and show up more vibrant.

OMGLITZY: February Thoughts

February Thoughts

I was hoping to make a February Vlog for YouTube kind of like I did for January but seeing how it’s already March 7 I figured let’s just type it out this time! I really don’t want to lose momentum from the boost of creative energy I had at the beginning of this year. February was a true test for this because life sure did like to tell me “NO!” I applied for so many things in February and every single thing came back negative. I’ve been reaching out more to friends and that’s really helped me keep my chin up. I received so much positive feedback and advice after my “Staying Positive” blog post. I read all the comments and emails and private messages and to be honest that’s truly what has kept me from throwing in the towel again. Last year I gave up so easily at the first sign of defeat.

In February, I applied for a Twitch subscribe button. They got back to me with the standard “We receive a lot of applications and have to choose wisely. Please apply again in 2-4 weeks if you want.” So I’ve been researching more what makes a Twitch channel great. I’ve come to realize that it’s truly about building a community. I’m going to focus more on that and hope to make any viewers that stop by my channel feel excited and welcome to be there. So I’ve been thinking of ways to do that and hope we can all grow more soon and maybe reapply for the button in a few more weeks.
I also applied for a partnership with Guild Wars 2. I sent it in once at the beginning of February and another at the end. No reply. I’m guessing they might not be accepting new partners right now. They recently announced that their Game Director (Colin Johanson) was leaving. I imagine there is a lot going on there. So for now I am not going to worry about that partnership and may reapply another time if it seems like they are interested in accepting new creators.
Probably the biggest bummer was seeing the response to my job application. I submitted it online for a pretty cool company in my area and felt super confident I would be a perfect fit for them. They never called me and a few weeks later I finally checked my submission on their site and saw the “received” was changed to “reviewed; not selected”. I admit I was pretty upset they didn’t even want a phone interview. It felt as if I wasn’t given a fair chance at proving myself. However, I have learned from this how important your application and resume must be. Not only for this job but for all the things I’ve been applying for lately. I can’t just assume what I put down is going to land me everything I want. I have to keep improving and growing. That means I can’t lose momentum here. If I continue to sit back and twiddle my thumbs nothing is going to change. So it’s up to me to push myself to become better!

February wasn’t all drab. Tsum Tsum Tuesday was fun because they released the Star Wars collection. Pixie had a positive check up at the vet. I attended the Dallas Boat Show and saw some cool and sparkly boats. I started playing RuneScape which is actually really fun! I was able to have lunch with some family I hadn’t seen in awhile. Valentine’s Day was a blast as I hosted some giveaways on stream and received the cutest dragon plushies from my parents.

I uploaded my first wig review video that I worked pretty hard on. My raid group on GW2 has progressed so much that we actually kill all 3 bosses in less than a hour. A super kind gift arrived from Jerome J. who got me a Hogwarts robe from my Amazon wishlist. And finally thanks to the generous donations from my Twitch stream I upgraded from my 9 year old desk chair to a fancy DXRacer Racing Series chair! I plan to make a whole review post about it so be on the lookout for that soon.

After typing and rereading that last paragraph, I realize that I am still guilty of dwelling on the negative. I mean SO many great and happy things happened in February. Sure some bad was mixed in there, but one of the great things about blogging is discovering yourself in the process. Had I not typed that out and reflected I may have never seen how truly good life can be. Thank you all for sharing this journey with me and I hope you have a great week!
xoxo,
Glitzy

  1. Your time will come I'm sure of it, never seen a better community hub for gw2 on Twitch even tho I'm from EU so most of the time I lurk (when I catch the live latenight my time). I'm not into the game as much as I was but I still keep watching interesting people on Twitch and from what I've seen you really deserve the button and all the partnerships in the world. Stay strong and believe in what you do, life will come around and reward you. This was an interesting read so thank you for sharing, and sorry for grammar I'm on my phone :)) Good luck and keep up the good work. Also !chairhype (mynameisfurion)

  2. Hopefully March will be better for you. It's natural for some months to kinda suck, and it's okay to be in a funk if that's how you're feeling. I have a good feeling about things in the future for you though. 🙂

OMGLITZY: February Outings

February Outings

This year one of my New Year’s resolutions was to see more of Dallas. My goal was to do at least one event a month. Well I was off to a bad start because I didn’t do anything in January lol … But February I more than made up for it!
For Valentine’s Day I went to eat at the Olive Garden. It’s one of my favorites! I always order spaghetti and pig out on breadsticks.
That night I went to see the movie Beautiful Creatures. I read the book and was really excited for the movie. It was a bit of a letdown, though. The storyline was changed quite a bit, and I felt very confused. I didn’t enjoy it 🙁

My next outing was to the Dallas Museum of Art. I was invited to “Late Night at the Museum” … Every third Friday the museum is open until midnight. It’s free admission and you can watch performances and see panels in different rooms. My favorite was the Steampunk room.
I was also amazed to see “Water Lilies” by Claude Monet. We had a print of this in my home growing up so I recognized it right away. I just can’t believe I saw the real thing!

Next up is going to the Wyly Theater for a play. This was my outfit for my night.
I got to watch the play King Lear by Shakespeare. It was unique because they modernized it. Think of the new Romeo + Juliet movie with Leo. Still said the play word by word but used guns and wore suits. Very cool!
Next was my night at the House of Blues. This is what I wore to see Lindsey Stirling perform. She is a beautiful violinist. She was on America’s Got Talent and made it to the top 5. Her music is beautiful.

After purchasing her album on iTunes, I find myself replaying Song of the Caged Bird the most. I also love Crystallize, Elements, and of course her cover of Zelda songs.

I also want to add this photo to show a wonderful client I had in February. She donated over 10 inches of her hair. Isn’t that great?? I thought her style came out lovely! You can follow more photos of my clients on my salon’s Facebook page.
:+:+:+:+:+:
So far I think I’ve done a good job with my New Year’s resolution! Last weekend I went to AllCon, and this weekend is the MLG Winter Championships. But I still want to do more “Dallas-like” things. When the weather warms up I want to go to Six Flags!
What special events have you been to this year so far?
Anything planned for the spring?

  3. When the weather warms up I'd like to go geocaching around Dallas. That should be fun. Next up is Segway tour of Dallas. Yes I shall conquer one of those mobile machines and not fall over.

  4. Sounds like you've been doing a lot of fun stuff! I hope you're doing equally great things in March.

That's really cool that you saw Lindsey Stirling. I have her CD (or one of them.. not sure if she has more than one). I love violin, and she's really good at it.

  5. How do you put those button links to your pinterest and stuff, where its says connect on your blog?

    Replies

    1. I think I used a script from this generator http://www.niftybuttons.com/ and replaced the photos with a set I found elsewhere that offered more options. If you google "social media buttons" you will find a lot of pre-made buttons then all you have to do is make each button make it into a link.

I was looking through iPhoto and kept stopping on cute photos of Pixie and saying “AWW!” out loud.. They aren’t all recent, but I figured it would make a good post for the blog! Here are a few of my favs.

When I’m at the computer she is usually in my lap. She enjoys watching me play Everquest II.

OMGLITZY: DIY: Rapunzel Bulletin Board

DIY: Rapunzel Bulletin Board

I have been using a plain brown bulletin board for many years, and it finally occurred to me that I should paint it! I decided to give it a Rapunzel inspired look. This only took me about an hour to do and was so easy and fun!
Supplies needed:
Bulletin board
Paint of your choice
Paint brush
Newspaper
Notecards
Glue
Glitter
Jewels

First, I laid out some newspaper so I wouldn’t make a mess. Then, I used notecards to stick around the frame so I wouldn’t get paint on the cork board. Next, I painted the frame with metallic purple and sprinkled fine glitter one it while it was still wet.
(Tip: Put a phone book under your bulletin board so it won’t stick to your newspaper after you paint it)

I picked out jewels to match Rapunzel’s colors which are purple, pink, yellow and gold (orange)

Then, I would put a dot of glue on the frame and stick my jewels to it.

You can put how ever many jewels as you want. You could also use little stickers if you don’t want to mess with glue!
After I let my frame dry over night, I hung up my bulletin board and pinned some of my favorite things to it!
